Michael's Story
As of 1/29/13:
Since I was a kid, I wanted to join the Navy, so after H.S. I did just that. I was accepted into Class A school for Communications Technicians, which is a misleading name for Communications Intelligence. I liked the work, all top secret and interesting work, but decided to not extend my service, so I could go to college on the G.I. Bill.
I eventually graduated with a B.A. in Psychology and American Studies from C.U.N.Y.
I never did anything with Psychology, but ended up making a career in the computer science field. For the last 23 years I was an Oracle Database Administrator and Data Warehouse Manager, before retiring in 2011.
During my college years, I met a beautiful girl (supermodel material, and smart as well) and we were married in '72. I always considered myself way beyond lucky for the 40 years of our marriage....Expand for more
We had a boy and two girls, all of whom eventually graduated from college. In 1998, with dwindling work in my specialty in the N.Y. area, I moved the family to the Lehigh Valley (currently Schnecksville, PA, about 7 miles north of Allentown). We bought a beautiful home (my wife said it was the house of her dreams), which we mockingly referred to as a "McMansion".
My wife was a Hofstra graduate, with a Masters in Education, and taught most of her adult life. Most tragically, last fall she had a recurrence of cancer that she had in 2007, which we thought was completely cured. She passed away in December 2012. So, here I am in the "McMansion" trying to get the place ready to sell in the spring, so I can downsize to a more suitable home.
I sometimes come back to the Island to visit family and great friends that I have had since childhood.
