Michael's Story

I joined the Navy July 2, 1965. After boot camp in San Diego I attended the Navy school for machinist mates in Great Lakes Illinois upon graduation I was assigned to the U.S.S. Annapolis off the coast of Viet Nam for a year. Then I was sent to Pascagoula Mississippi for new construction of the U.S.S. Dubuque. While in Pascagoula I met a girl and made plans. When I was discharged in January 1969, I returned to Mississippi. Well my plans did not work out but I stayed here, I did not leave anything in California. I went to work for Chevron Oil Co. in the largest oil refinery east of the Mississippi River and Chevrons largest domestic refinery. I was single, had an excellent job, a brand new car (1970 Dodge Super Bee) and my life was taking off. Then I met my future bride Meedie Frances Rowell from Fairhope Alabama and my life changed forever more. We were married in August 1970, and a roller coaster ride began and has never stopped, been married ever since. Eleven months after getting married we had a daughter Terri Michele, four years later had another daughter Katherine Tennille, eight years later had another daughter Elizabeth Wynnell and finally four years later has another daughter Janet Kay. We have 6 grandchildren 3 girls, Katie 12 and Raleigh 2 and Chandler born 01-18-2010, 3 boys Tye 9, Landon 3, Aiden 4 months. I worked at the refinery for 35 years and while working shifts went to college and received a degree in business administration. After working for 35 years I retired in January 2005, in August 2005 hurricane Katrina hit and turned our lives upside down. We have weathered 5 major hurricanes Camille, Fredrick, Elena, Georges and the worst Katrina. During Katrina we sent all the kids to Pensacola Florida to stay with Meedies mother. Meedie and I stayed in the house that we had lived in for 32 years and as the water rose to our noses we climbed a Crepe Myrtle tree and got on our roof and watched our stuff and lives swirl away in the 10 foot deep chocolate b...Expand for more
rown flood waters of Katrina. The stuff (cars, furniture, TVs etc) can be replaced but we lost everything that was really important to us, all the kids report cards, school projects as well as all the little things kids do and make while growing up (we kept everything they ever did), literally hundreds of family photographs and all of our important papers. The next 3 years are a blur of fighting State Farm, FEMA, MEMA and all the other bureaucracy trying to get our lives back together. We now live closer to the Gulf but on much higher ground. I love my family and living in Mississippi. The friendliest people alive live in Mississippi. Our weather, sweltering heat and humidity in the summer, mild winters and stunning springs and falls. The city where we live (Pascagoula) at one time everybody knew everybody else and it took 5 minutes to say good morning to all the neighbors. That has changed. But life is good and it costs a lot less then other cities. Mobile Alabama is 40 miles east, Pensacola Florida is 100 miles east, New Orleans Louisiana is 100 miles west of us and of course there is Biloxi/Gulfport in between. When those yankees from up north come to visit you cant beat them away with a baseball bat after they have been here awhile. I have bought and sold 81 vehicles, hundreds of military weapons, collected railroad stuff, Coco Cola stuff, old tools, vintage kitchen stuff, vintage wrist watches and enough antique furniture to equip a good sized museum. I really enjoy my old 62 Ford Galaxie 2 door Club Sedan (406, tri-power, 4-speed for you gear heads) and restoring old furniture the worse condition the better I like it. I was always good with wood. As I sit at this computer in the still of the morning I look over at a stupid brown eyed dog eyeballing me while laying on a pile of dirty clothes and wait for the invasion of grand kids when my quite time evaporates into noise and chaos. Well that's about it. Go New Orleans Saints, Atlanta Braves,Bama (roll tide]and Ole Miss
