Michael's Story
Life
After sowing many wild oats playing music and roaming around the country I found a career at age 30, actually two careers. I have over 23 years with the Federal Aviation Administration and the Tennessee Air National Guard. Both have been very good to me. I am blessed with a beautiful wife (remember Pam Phillips the flag corps fox? Yep, she's mine! Look at the picture...she's still a fox.), two fine step-sons and a precious grand-daughter. I still play the drums and look like a bean-pole. We've been in Nashville since 1991 but get back to Murvul every month for drill. I miss seeing my high school buddys and would love to hear from any of y'all. I hope we have a 35 year reunion and I see you there!
Workplace
From 1976 to 1984 I did a variety of things: professional musician, photographer, screen printer, ditch digger then construction superintendent. I got tired of being a gypsy and decided I needed a career and some stability so I joined the Air Guard in 1985 and worked full time for about a 18 months learning electronics maintenance. I applied for a electronic...Expand for more
s technician job with the FAA and accepted an offer to move to Fayetteville, NC. I transferred to Nashville in 1991 and have been there since. I transitioned from electronics maintenance to aviation safety in 1996 and now am a safety inspector and travel a good bit. After 16 years as an avionics specialist in the Air Guard I took a position as a First Sergeant and did that for almost 6 years. I am now the Human Resource Advisor and hope to stick around a few more years.
The best part of being in Nashville is the awesome musicians that I have met through my church. Occasionally I get a call to fill in on drums with some pro players and I jump at the chance. Make a few bucks and have a ball. If I had it to do over again, I would have applied myself to music instead of partying when I was young. I like my job, but I love my music.
Pam and I bumped into one another back in 1986 in a freak (fate) meeting. She couldn't shake me and finally gave in and married me on New Years Day on 1987. She still works part-time and loves being "Grama" to our 6 year old grand-daughter.
