Michael's Story

I left Watsonville at the beginning of my Senior year, family issues required us to move to Redwood City where I graduated from Woodside High School in 1968. But I've always consider Watsonville my Alma Mater. I continued my job with Safeway and enrolled at San Jose State in the fall of '68, but the work and the stress and a fair (OK! excessive) amount of partying caused my grades to crash. I wisely took the spring semester off to regroup when I got an offer to continue my studies overseas in "Conflict Resolution" and "Aggresive Negotiation Techniques" and my "Uncle Sam" was willing to pay my way with a full scholarship. I was Drafted. It was an offer I couldn't refuse. I came home two years later, much wiser, only slightly worst for wear and ready to pick up where I had been so rudely interrupted. I took classes when I could, work went well and promotion came quickly, I met a wonderful woman who became my lovely wife in 1974 and the mother of our two amazing children born in 1977 and 1982. We settled in Fremont to raise our family, were active with all the usual groups,PTA, Soccer, Scouts, Little League, etc. I had cancer in 1988, non-hodgkins lymphoma (it's now considered...Expand for more
service-connected, funny, Vietnam was still trying to kill me). I ended my climb up the corporate ladder with Safeway earlier when my kids were still little to spend more time with them and support my wife in her careers goals. My activism with my Union found me leaving Safeway and becoming the Benefits Supervisor for Local 428(now Local 5 in San Jose) and in 2005 after 38 years in the industry I said goodbye and retired. The kids are now grown, my daughter recently completed her doctoral at the University of Bristol, my son is at San Jose State studying Political Science and interning with the San Jose City Council. My wife and I separated and then divorced but remain good friends, go figure... When people ask I tell them that we were happy for 20 years,... then we met. I spend my time here in Redwood City, I have a small (25ft) sailboat in the local marina that I spend too much money on for slip fees and maintenance and too little time sailing the bay. I now have the time to catch up on all the books I've always wanted to read, and am finding more faster than I can read, always a stack on my nightstand. And as Forrest Gump would say, "that's all I got to say about that"...
