Michael's Story

Life After graduation I basically just worked, moved to Long Island, and spent a lot of time camping, and just relaxing. By 1973, I decided that this plan needed adjustment, so I joined the Air Force. There, I spent most of my off duty time fishing, going to school, and camping. It was a great decision. For the first time I felt at home. My first job was as a Statistician, and I did that for about four and a half years from Missouri and North Dakota to Korea, and finally at Ramstein Air Base Germany. While I was at Ramstein it was decided that I should be a counselor, given my undergrad major. After four years in Germany I went to back to North Dakota for a second tour, which was a paradise of fishing and camping. Finishing there, I went to South Dakota, and then back to Germany for six more years. Having completed college, and most of Grad school, I took some time to indulge my love of body building seriously, while studying martial arts and marathoning. My work primarily consisted of running a counseling center for substance abuse, and Equal Opportunity for four of the years, finishing the last two as the European Inspector for those programs at 29 bases from Turkey to Norway. After that tour was over I was assigned to Headquarters Air Force Reserve in Georgia, and supervised the counseling offices at 106 Reserve bases, as well as establishing Family Support offices at each base during "Desert Storm". Since it was the military, I also had a wartime job in Air Base Ground Defense/Terrorism Control. It was interesting (even amusing) going from couselor to soldier and back. Mostly it just invovled keeping the "Bader Meinhof Gang", a German terror group away from US facilities and assets, looking for bombs and somtimes just manning the perimeter bunkers during high threat periods. ong the way I had a Daughter who lives in New Jersey and is now 39 years old. She works in accounting for a major tax firm. Of course, the rigors of a military career with constant travel cost me two marriages. I guess its tough to be married to someone who is gone for weeks to a year at a time and often on one hour's notice. After retiring in 1993, I moved to Colorado and lived there from mid 1993 to Late 1997. I worked in Real Estate for a while, but finally gave in to my first love, and became a Certified Personal Trainer. I loved it, but became seriously ill in 96, and couldn't work out. To fill the gap, I learned to trade stocks and stock options. It appealed to me, and was about all I could do for a year. As I regained my health, I left olorado and moved to rural Virginia so I could be near my mother who might need my help as she aged. I live here on six wild acres with my dog and pretty much love it. The house is hidden from the road by the trees and its quiet. I have lived here since Late '97, working as a trader...AT HOME! Now that Mom is planning to move to a Senior community, I'll probably go back to Colorado in a year or so. A lot of my military buddies live there, and several other close friends. It has been an incredible ride, much more exicting than I thought life would be. I never expected to see virtually all of Europe at a relaxed pace, or to be able to live and travel parts of Asia. Even the Dakotas transcended anything I ever thought about them. Yet of all the places I have seen, there is a special place in my heart for Korea. The one thing that has stood out all these years is the solid foundation we received in the public education system. It made all the difference in the kinds of opportunities presented to me during my career, and in my current pursuits.
