Michael's Story

Captain Meier graduated from Vanderbilt University with a B.A. degree in mathematics and was commissioned in May 1980. Upon completion of flight school in May 1981 he reported to Helicopter Mine Countermeasures Squadron TWELVE (HM-12) as the Asst. Schedules Officer while undergoing training as a Fleet Replacement Pilot. From June 1982 until June 1985 he was assigned to Helicopter Mine Countermeasures Squadron FOURTEEN (HM-14). While attached to HM-14 he twice deployed aboard USS Tripoli (LPH-10). Additionally, he participated in Operation INTENSE LOOK conducting real world minehunting operations in the Red Sea and non-combatant evacuation operations from Beirut, Lebanon while deployed aboard USS Shreveport (LPD-12). In June 1985, he returned to HM-12 as an RH-53D Instructor Pilot. In July 1988, CAPT Meier reported to U.S. Naval Test Pilot School aboard NAS Patuxent River, Maryland. Upon completion of the TPS curriculum he served as Project Test Pilot for the H-53, H-57, and H-60. is tour he participated in Operation TOXIC LOOK, and Exercises OCEAN VENTURE and BLUE HARRIER. He reported to the Naval Air Systems Command in Crystal City, Virginia in December. In July 1995 he departed NAVAIR for the Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island where he received an M.A. degree in National Security Policy in June 1996. Returning to the Naval Air Systems Command, CAPT Meier served as the MH-53E Deputy Program Manager until March 1998. He commanded the Airborne Mine Countermeasures Weapon Systems Training School (AWSTS) from July 1998 to July 2000. His next assignment from July 2000 to May 2002 was as Air Boss aboard USS INCHON (MCS 12) where he deployed to the Western Pacific. CAPT Meier's last Navy assignment before his retirement in Jun 2005 was as the Asst. Chief of Staff for Aviation Warfare on the staff of Commander, Operational Test and Evaluation Force in Norfolk, VA. Since his retirement, he has worked as a Senior Systems Engineer for Wyle Laboratories in Virginia Beach, VA. He is currently the Virginia Beach Sector Manager for Wyle. He is married to the former Tracey Jeanne Short of Greensburg, Pennsylvania. They have two sons, Anthony and Jake.
