Life
Having written this once when first subscribing, the text never saved or posted to the site, so at my sister Karen's urging over a period of the last several months, here I go again! Thank you Karen!
First, to anyone reading this, I hope that you and yours are well! After 25 years of living in Los Angeles, I must admit that I still think of Michigan as home as it will always be a source of so many wonderful memories in both high school and college. It was from Troy Athens to U-M/ Ann Arbor that I went in the Fall of 1978. I was at U-M just long enough to complete my Bachelor's degree, having majored in Accounting & Finance with a minor in Psychology. The ink wasn't even dry on my diploma when I relocated to Los Angeles where I began a banking career with Lloyds of London.
As much as I thought that I would love banking, I moved on to business management 4 years later when joining a financial consulting firm that catered to the entertainment industry. Managing the business interests of various actors was both fun and rewarding, but the on-call nature of the work (24/7) grew wearisome after 2 years. In 1988, I joined a start-up corporation, first as its Controller, then later as its President/ CEO. Over the next 15 years, what was once a fledgling start-up specializing in repro-graphics (pre-press/ photofinishing) had grown to 90 employees strong and once again, I was starved for personal time, so I broke from that in 2003 and took a year off for "good behavior." Upon returning to work in late 2004, I now work as a Corporate Controller, managing the affairs of 3 different companies whose service offerings are all design-based. As Robert Louis Stevenson penned, "it is happier to travel than to arrive" and surely, I continue to enjoy my journey!
Should any of this make it sound like I live to work, nothing could be further from the truth. I met my life partner, Frank, in early '91 w...Expand for more
ho is 6 years my junior and but for a 6 month trial separation, we have spent nearly 17 years together. It has been our good fortune to trot the globe to explore most all of Europe and a couple of destinations in Asia. We keep a lovely home in a canyon setting near Pasadena's Rose Bowl and are the proud "parents" of a Doberman and a Golden Retriever. That we are dog lovers is an understatement as we devote any and all spare time to the "kids." They are a continued source of joy to us morning, noon, and night!
Family plays an important role in my life as I remain close with both sisters, Karen ('80) and Kathy ('81.) Both have remained in Michigan and are happily married. It's hard for me to believe that Karen's single child, our niece, Ally, has just entered college (Sep '07.) Everyone has grown-up so very fast! I couldn't be prouder of my sisters and their numerous accomplishments and I'm sorry that I'm not more successful in bridging the miles between us (no pun intended!)
I delight in keeping-up with dear friends, Jan Osborn, Donna Zobel, and occasionally Kathy McGillivary & Dave Jakubiak, in addition to Mike Hiser ('77) and Luba Petrusha ('76.) Fond memories of Troy Athens and many of you who read this punctuate my thoughts nearly 30 years later. And whether it was Math, Science, English, Foreign Language, Social Studies, or Guidance Counseling, there were outstanding teachers & counselors at Troy Athens to whom I owe a debt of gratitude. In memoriam, I would also like to reiterate how very much I miss my dear friend, Marla Weirauch, who died of breast cancer just over 10 years ago (May '97.) Hardly a day goes by when I don't think about her. She will always hold a special place in my heart.
OK, that's enough about me and here's hoping that I've placated my sister, Karen, by finally writing this piece! To everyone, take good care and best wishes in all that you do! Toodles. M2
