Michael's Story

Graduated from Iowa State in 1984 with a degree in Graphic Design, ( as I walked across the stage they were moving computers into the Design College so interviews where very interesting) worked as a custom picture framer for 16 years for The Frame Shop in Ames, worked as the Director of Development for the Octagon Center for the Arts in Ames for 4 years. Owned Gallery 319 from 2004 - 2016 as a small business owner with my wife Marla. Worked part time for Durham School Services for the past 7 years as a school bus driver for the Ames Middle school and will begin doing this full time this fall 2016. Marla and I worked for 10 years as foster parents for DHS as a Treatment Level 3 home and had many great but troubled kids during our time working for DHS. We met a ten year old boy named Steven in 2000 and he came to live in our home later that year and we adopted him as our son in July of 2001. Marla had been an Adult/ Child Abuse investigator in Polk county and moved to Boone County soon after we married in 1992. Marla and I met at the Drama workshop when we both auditioned for Joseph and the Technicolor Dream Coat, dated as we did shows at the Ingersoll Dinner Theater, The DM Playhouse, and ACTORS Theater in Ames. I started doing theater in 1987 with ACTORS and I have worked on stage as an actors in over 50 productions. I have also stage managed, been tech director for several shows and I directed my 15th production this year for ACTORS summer musical Kiss Me Kate. Since 2004 I have been a member of the Ames Noon Kiwanis Club and I have served on the board for 6 years been the treasurer for 4 years and this year(2015-16) I am the President of the club and next year I will be Immediate past president and Lt Gov - Elect of Division 11 of the Nebraska - Iowa District and Lt. Gov in 2017-18. Marla has attended many functions with me as a spouse of a Kiwanian and decided to join the club this year. For those ...Expand for more
who are not familiar with Kiwanis we are a global organization of volunteers dedicated to improving the world one child and one community at a time. We joined with many other medical organizations to help eradicate IDD in the world 10 years ago and are now working worldwide to eradicate Maternal Neonatal Tetanus in 3rd world countries. Marla and I enjoy traveling, "camping" (it used to be in a tent when we were younger but now we have a 5th wheeler which is more like taking a hotel room with you), boating, fishing, canoeing and have started looking at getting kayaks, we also bowled in a league for ten years until I had back surgery last year and so I am slowly getting back into bowling condition. It is a pain getting old sometimes. We have great friends, a large theater family and are looking forward to retirement within the next 2 years for Marla and 7-8 for me. As a school bus driver I have summers off mostly (I do some special athletic trips and seed corn in July) so when Marla fully retires we look forward to be able to take the camper and hit the road even more. We are usually busy in the summers so we haven't gotten to any reunions but one in if I remember correctly in 1997. I still cheer for Valley even when they are playing Ames (which irritates many of our friends who graduated from Ames but its all in fun). Marla and I purchased end zone seats in the new end Zone Club at ISU last year since working as a student trainer for ISU during my college days, I had to be on the sidelines in all types of weather I really didn't like just sitting in the stands so when the new end zone club opened we decided to give it a shot and it made going to the games really enjoyable. So if anyone also has seats in the end zone come look us up in sec 22 row 40 seats 13 and 14. OK that is a brief synopsis of me since high school maybe we can make the next reunion - if not this website is a good way to keep in touch.
