Michael's Story

Life Currently I practice medical oncology in South Texas, where I've been since I left the Army. I'm the "greybeard" in a multimember group, which means I get to hear all the complaints. Kinda like "E.R" except less sex! I'm also the only certified Hospice and Palliative Medicine physician in our local area, which keeps me plenty busy. Prior to that, I spent 12 years, 10 days and 6 hours in the Army, where I saw such scenic areas as Ft. Rucker, Alabama and won an all expense paid trip to South Iraq during the first war. I really didn't mind the service, they kept their end of the deal and I got to see and do some things that will stay with me for the rest of my life, for better or worse. I have 4 kids, aged 23-14, 2 boys, 2 girls. Our oldest is a third year student at St. Mary's University school of Law and hopes to eventually enter the diplomatic service. Our oldest daughter is a senior at Texas A&M studing exersize science and physiology; she also coaches a local swim team.. Number 2 son plans to capitalize on the family name and his natural talents and get Steve Nash's job with the Suns after he leaves A&M. Her imperial Highness, Princess Elizabeth, aged 14, is a local equestrian, riding a patient throughbred named "Danny" and making her way through the Hunter/Jumper world. School What can I say, three high schools in four years? Talk about a kidney stone of an experience.....When I graduated from DeSoto the school newspaper ran a feature "Where the Seniors will be in Twenty Years.." I was listed as working at Taco Bell. Guess I made a real impression on the cliques at ol' DHS. Red Hook was far and away the best of the high schools, and had the nicest people over all. es in that part of the country, buit then some people who knew me alwys thought I spent too much time thinking about the future. Tha's because I usually was someplace I didn't want to be, and couldn't wait to get someplace else. I remember my first job was stringing for the weekly Desoto paper for 25 cents per column inch, back when I wanted to be a journalist. Turned out I was a pretty talanted obituary writer and to this day I read thm with a professional eye every morning. PA was pretty much just a blur, I left just as I was finding my way around, although I do recall some individuals fondly. Back then I had the wild heart of the young, just hidden. If I ever win the Lotto, I'm going to fake my own death and go find it again. College BA, Biology, Texas A&M University 1980 MD, university of texas Health Science Center, Houston, 1984 Residency in Internal Medicine, Brooke Army Medical Center, Ft. Sam Houston, TX 1984-87 Fellow, Hematology/Oncology, Brooke Army Medical Center, 1987-1990 College was not bad, not bad at all. I wish I'd spent more time goofing off and made some spring break trips instead of living in the lab. I should have listened more to Dr. Krise and less to Dr. Shapiro. All in all, for changing majors so drastically, no complaints. Medical School really sucked, plain and simple. But then I was still in awe of professors and only gradually realized they had much less power than they (and I) thought. I remember one supervising resident in particular; if I ever see him in the crosswalk I'm going to run him over.....Some crappy attendings, some great ones that I'll never forget. Now I guess they don't do things the same way in medical school and residency. Ahhh, the days of wooden ships and iron men....
