More about Michael:"On 9/11/2001 I was starting a new contract as Assistant Shore-Ex manager for Renaissance Cruise Lines, and was moving into my permanent cabin. I had joined the ship a few days before in Amsterdam, and we were now in our home port of Dover, England. I had CNN on as I was unpacking and caught the attack pretty much right from the start. When the second plane hit, the thought that went through my mind was "terrorist attack", which had yet to be confirmed. I managed to complete my unpacking in tears. The following week, half of the Renaissance fleet sailed empty. The week after, I remember being at sea when the captain announced that Renaissance had just announced they were going into bankruptcy, and the ship was turning around to return to England, where arrangements were being made to fly the passengers home. The crew, however, was stuck for the time being. I spent the next three weeks in England, as the lawyers were negotiating a way to pay the crew, get them home, and also pay the accumulating port fees. I had a chance to see Dover before the ship moved up the Thames, closer to London. Then I had a chance to see London. If I had known that I'd be there that long, I would have visited Ireland, or Scotland, but we were expecting to be sent home any day. To Renaissances' credit, I was paid for the time I spent waiting for a ticket home (and continued to eat and sleep on board) and was given an additional months salary. I was really looking forward to seeing the Mediterranean ports, but that was not to be. As it was, I only got to see a little of England, Amsterdam, Oslo, Belgium, and ironically Normandy. I'll never forget the majestic way the crosses were lined up at the cemetery there. Back home, the unemployment bureau paid for my truck driver training, and I drove big rigs for a while with my newly acquired Class A license, which would come in handy later, when I worked for the DOC. My career as an assistant manager for the local Blockbuster Video store lasted until a Correctional Officer stopped by the store and gave me the recruiting sergeants phone number. I was hired by the state in June of 2003, trained, passed the exam and worked at a major correctional institution in Milton, FL until I transferred to Big Pine Key Road Prison in January of 2005. The last number of years I drove a big yellow DOT truck with a five inmate road crew on board. So if you happened to see five inmates, dressed in blue, walking down US 1 with plastic bags and pick sticks picking up trash in Key Largo, (Amy and Shane), that would have been me driving the truck following them. My territory extended from the DOT yard in Marathon at MM 48 to the Dade County line at MM 112.5. We also cleaned up many of the bridge ends, and occasionally some of the "hot spots" in the mangroves. At the en...Expand for more
d of 2007, beginning of 2008, I began experiencing a strange feeling in the middle of my chest when I was riding my bicycle, like someone was placing their thumb on my sternum and pushing ever so slightly. Increasing my speed didn't seem to have any effect. Sometimes a burp would make it disappear. My doctor was happy with the results of my annual physicals, I've never smoked, and rarely drink, so I wasn't surprised that all the tests; EKG's, X-rays, sonograms, came back negative. I skied in Steamboat Springs that January, and continued to ride my bike. I finally was scheduled for a stress test in June. The following week I was in a Miami hospital waiting for stents to be inserted into two partially blocked arteries. Unfortunately, the doctors discovered that the blockage was at the junction of two arteries, so stents were out. They cracked my chest and performed a double by-pass. All I could think about was that I could no longer go snorkeling with the Dive In program! How ironic that I turned down so many people because of that medical form. I specifically remember an incident in Bermuda with Ben Rogers. We were motoring to pick up some guests on a nearby pier, when I spotted a "zipper" on the chest of one of the men already on the boat. We had to ask him to disembark at the pier with a promise to credit his account later. How ironic, indeed. My surgery was June 28th and I was walking around a few days later. Within a few months I was running and biking, and back to work. I skied at Jackson Hole the following January. By then I think I was fully recovered. I had a really great week in Breckenridge this past January, where I skied the best I had in years. I happened to overhear two newly retired couples discussing their new lifestyle in the B&B I was lodged at . This sparked an idea. Since I was only able to enjoy skiing one week a year, maybe I should retire in July at age 62, grab Social Security while it's still available, buy an RV and ski as much as I want as long as my knees and health hold out! So I did! I bought a 26 foot RV in February, turned 62 July 15, and retired/resigned July 28th. On the way north I stopped to visit a few interesting places, including the Edison/Ford Estate and the Southwest Florida Museum, both in Fort Myers, the Ringling Estate and Art Museum in Sarasota, Epcot, and the Kennedy Space Center. I'm now parked by my sister's house in Milton, FL, waiting for an appointment with the VA. Once that's done, I'll be heading north to my other sister's in PA. She needs some help cleaning up after Hurricane Irene flooded her basement. I plan to split the upcoming holidays between my two sisters, then head out to Breckenridge for a month or two of skiing. In the spring I'd like to go to Durango and ride their narrow gauge railroad, and do some awesome zip lining over the river. Then head to Mesa Verde to check out the cliff dwellings. My long range plans include visiting as many National Parks and Civil War sites as I can. I'd also like to see DC. Maybe the Washington Monument will be open again when I arrive. Who ever heard of an earthquake in Virginia, anyway? Driving up to Alaska sounds good, too. I can only hope that the price of diesel fuel doesn't go too much higher!".
