Michael's Story
Life
After obtaining a degree in Chemical Engineering from RPI I went to work in '67 for Hooker (Durez) in NT, transferred to a plant in Kentucky for two years, then back to Buffalo Ave. In 1979 OxyChem sent me on a "temporary" assignment to their phosphate mine and fertilizer facility at White Springs in North Fl. I found out you could fish 12 months/yr. here so I never went back. In '95 the plant was sold to Potash Corp. of Saskatchewan and I retired there on 1/1/2006 as the Engineering and Maintenance Mgr. I was married in '68 had four kids along the way, divorced in 2000 and remarried (Maxie) in 2004. Unfortunately my oldest son Joe passed away 1/19/02 at the age of 31. I'm very proud of my kids. Jennifer is an Occupational Therapist, Janelle is a CPA and the youngest, James, is a Pharmacist. No grandchildren of my own but there are 5 "step-grandchildren." g to the phrase, "the lord works in mysterious ways." I am now on the City Council of Horseshoe Beach. I'm hoping that my experience will be of some value to the town as we begin construction of a new reverse osmosis water plant. HSB is a very small town on the Gulf of Mexico in the Big Bend area of Florida. Our permanent population is less than 100 and on a real busy weekend it might swell to about 400-500. Our post office is so small that if the sender forgets to put the box no. on the letter we get it anyhow. To my utter amazement we now have 68 condos in HSB(not all of which are sold). Actually there is no beach here and if you don't like to fish you probably don't belong here. I am truly blessed to have been "found" by my wife of almost three years. We have a place her aunt left her right on the Gulf and there is a canal in the back yard where I keep a 21.5'boat (it's about a two minute ride to the Gulf). We often see dolphin feeding and sometimes mating right out in front of the house. Ospreys catching trout or mullet is routine entertainment seen from our front porch; bald eagles stealing from the ospreys is less frequent.
