Michael's Story

Update August 23, 2014 - (notice the sparse, grey hair now!) After MHS I went to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in upstate NY. Upon graduation from RPI, I got a job at Grumman Aerospace in Bethpage where I worked for a couple of years. Then Grumman sent me to southern California for a year to Rockwell International during the start up of the Space Shuttle program. To make a long story shorter, when Grumman recalled me back to NY, I quit and stayed in California. I went to work at Rockwell, which was later acquired by Boeing. I worked first on the Space Shuttle program for 28 years, then on the new GPSIIF global positioning satellite program for the last 12 years. I was fortunate to have traveled a lot on the job all over the U.S., Japan and Russia. In 1978 I married Suzanne Smith and we had 3 children, 2 boys and a girl. They have all graduated from college and have jobs. Steve is in Hong Kong working for a NYC mutual fund, Stephanie is married and in Dallas and Andrew is in San Francisco. Suzanne and I are both retired and are living in Brea, a small city in Orange County (the OC), Calif. We are t...Expand for more
raveling, visiting kids and other relatives, and taking the opportunity while we still have some semblance of good health to see various parts of the country and the world (my sons and I went bungee jumping (!!) in New Zealand last year and visited some Lord of the Rings film sites!). We have also recently learned the pleasures of cruising! My older brother Fred (MHS '64) became an engineer and is now retired in Florida. Younger brother Norman (MHS '67) became a doctor (internist), and is retired living in the SF Bay area. Younger sister Dianna is a neurologist and a professor at the U of Colorado in Denver. We are all relatively healthy & happy in this stage of life. A lot has happened since we left Mineola. Most of it has been good, with opportunities provided to us. We understand that some bad luck and missed chances could have/can change all. So we are very grateful and thankful. The schools we attended (starting with Jackson Ave. Elementary) and friends we had in Mineola provided the foundation of experiences we used later. Boy, if only we knew then what we know now!! (-: Best wishes to you.
