Michael's Story
Hi Everyone,
I hope some of you who stop by this site remember me. Every so often I try to update what I say here. Can you believe we graduated 40 years ago (in 1972) already? Who'd 'a thunk? Right now I am doing a Geriatric Psychiatry Fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh. In July I start a 1 year Fellowship in Hospice and Palliative Medicine, in Bethlehem, PA. After that, who knows. I'll probably head back to Sioux Falls where my parents and siblings live and enjoy the convenient life there. (Plus no state, county or city income tax.) The last couple of winters I spent there were enough to drive me south, though.
Well here we are all these years later. I still have distinct memories of many of you from Patrick Henry and Lincoln. Even if I didn't know you well I probably knew your name. I have a tendency to reminisce about people and times. To a point it's good, I guess. I often associate music and the Top 40 Hits with particular time periods and events. Any of you do that too? I do the same with movies and TV programs. Star Trek's first season on Thu...Expand for more
rsday nights during 7th grade, and many others.
What have we done with our lives? Did we know then what we would become? Did we have any idea at all? Could we have anticipated the course that our life experience would follow? The influence of those years of growing up were mighty and their effects can be life-long, even if not clearly remembered. At the time, though, I don't think we could have imagined much beyond what we were living.
I've had the experience as a physician in Sioux Falls of caring for some of my old teachers and classmates. One classmate even in Hospice two years ago who passed away. It does make one stop and take stock.
Hopefully we became the sort of people we wanted to be, had families we're proud of, and feel a sense of satisfaction with how it all went.
Still, it is fun to reminisce and recall those days and how important all those things seemed to be at the time. I still love the music, movies and TV of the time.
Hope you all are doing well. Please drop me a line if possible, I'd love to hear from you.
Mike
