Attended Wayne State on full scholarship in 1970 until 1972, lost my student deferment and was drafted. Reported for duty 27Sept72. Sent to Baylor University to study as a pharmacist assistant Dec72 (their choice not mine), but I disliked that and transfered to be a field medic. Loved that. Served with the 1st Infantry Division (Big Red One) as an ambulance driver, 7th Medical Btln, 565th Medical Amb. Co. Went to Ft Sam Houston, Texas in San Antonio; Ft Polk Louisiana (Tigerland...a hellhole) and all over Germany for 36 days on TDY in Sept73. Third day there I had an attack of appendicitis, had to stay in hospital in Nueremburg until the last week. Then the Arab-Isreali October War started and our return flight was cancelled when the war ended after a few days. We were stuck an extra 10 days. The Army hadn't planned on that. They paid us a months pay, told us to get lost for a week in Europe because we screwed up their ration and housing plans. I was 21 years old, single with $350 extra money in my pocket (in 1973 that was worth more than today) for a week, had no one to answer to. It was the dream of a lifetime Had a great time Discharged 26Sept74 Came back to Wayne State on the GI Bill. Majored in Business Admin, Mgt. Graduated Aug 1978. Worked for SEIU, Local 79 '78-'82.
