Michael's Story
The quick version of post high school.----- Did two years at the U of Maryland in Munich and then finished a BA to the U of Rhode Island in 1976. Worked for a bit at a small store in Rhode Island, almost got married, and then went off to the Peace Corps as a fisheries extension agent in Cameroon (West Africa) from 1978 to 1980. Came back to US and ended up in San Franciso for 4 years in a really crappy job as a warehouse supervisor. Then hired by a small non-profit aid agency and spent 1984 and 1985 working on an agricultural support project in a small village about 60 miles from Timbuctou in northen Mali (Africa). Met my future wife, a beautiful American woman doing field research for her PhD, at a birthday party for a Marine guard at the US Embassy in Bamako, Mali. I was then transfered to run a wells project in Ouyagouya, Burkina Faso (also Africa) in 1986. Got married in 1987 in Mali. Came back to the US in 1988 and did a Master's degree at the Indiana U while my wife finished her dissertation and got her PhD. Then I was ...Expand for more
hired as a consultant by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in Nairobi to design a climate change program. They hired me to run the project and ended up statying at the UN in Nairobi for about 7 years. Got paid to travel all over the world. Meanwhile, my wife got a postion at Cleveland State U teaching anthropology and we bought a big old brick house built in 1912. I came back to the US in 1988 and did a bit of consulting and then in 2000 hired by an private aid agency to be the director of their program in Conakry, Guinea (Again, in Africa) for two years (2000 and 2001). came back to the US and did more consulting. Ended up with short term contracts in Angola (twice), Sierra Leone (twice), Liberia, Eritrea, Senegal and Niger (twice). Also, worked as the excutive director of a small non-profit in the US working on air quality issues and worked for a while starting a wind energy company. So, now I'm living a great life in Cleveland, Ohio with my wife and four cats, and looking forward to the next great adventure..
