Michael's Story

After graduating from Ramona High School I was hired by the San Diego Sheriff's Office in August of 1973. I was married in 1974 and during that 20 year union was blessed with six children five of whom still live in California. During a 28 year career with the Sheriff's Office I worked North County out of the Vista Station and Ramona from 1974 to 1975, Lemon Grove, Santee and Ramona again from 1979 to 1987. The last 12 years of my career I was a resident deputy in the back country around Ranchita and Warner Hot Springs. I was also a canine handler for fourteen years. I remarried in 1999 and upon retirement in 2001 moved to San Juan County, New Mexico. I worked as a brand inspector for the New Mexico Livestock Board for several months before being hired by the San Juan County Sheriff's Office in August 2001. I am currently assigned as the Investigator for the Rural Crimes Unit and deal predominantly with crimes occurring in the vast energy sector of the San Juan Basin. I have become active in state level legislation regarding energy crime issues and spend much of my time at the Capitol in Santa Fe before and during the legislative sessions. This last legislative session I assisted in drafting and passing a measure that will tighten regulations on the scrap metal industry where much of the recyclable metals that are stolen a...Expand for more
re taken to for sale. This bill passed unanimously in both houses and was signed by our Governor on 3/4/12. Next session we will be tackling death penalty issues as well as stricter monitoring of registered sex offenders and other relevant matters. My oldest son moved here in 2003 and began his family. He is now a Sergeant with the Archuleta County Sheriff's Office in Pagosa Springs about 45 miles from us. He also is a K9 handler. My wife and I incorporated our business, Fernbrook German Shepherds LLC in 2016 and we breed, train and sell pedigreed German Shepherd dogs to individuals and law enforcement all over the country. We live near Colorado state line and are close to a number of other family members. I collect and show vintage Plymouth automobiles from the 1960's and I am currently working on a restoration of a San Diego Sheriff's 1971 Plymouth Fury I patrol unit (the first that I ever drove). In addition we enjoy four wheel adventures in the San Juan mountains, building projects on the place and just exploring this beautiful part of the world. I have always counted it as one of life's great gifts to have been a part of Ramona High School in the time period that we were there. Growing up as a teenager in Ramona in the late 60's and early 70's was a tremendous experience and one that I will fondly remember always.
