Michael's Story

School I remember more faces than names (sorry folks). I started school on the early side, & attended Prospect Heights Elem from K-4 (SEP'64-JUN'69; Mr Pendleton was the principal & I met his paddle more than once; Mrs Edwards was my am-Kindergarten teacher). I was a strong & out-going average student at first, but by 3d-grade I was weak, shy, & well below average (I had Mrs Boyd as a teacher for both 3d & 4th grades). Due to mal-nutrition/near-starvation, the court awarded my sister & I a change of custody in 1969 (just before the lunar landing) & we moved to Inglewood where we were nursed back to health & attended Centinela Elem (SEP'69-JUN'70) -- where I did outstandingly well (repeating the 4th-grade that is -- with Mrs Doi as my new teacher; in this class I was normal-sized, having been extremely thin not long before). Made some friends, but a move across town made it so that I rarely saw any of them again (as my dad had become extremely protective, restricting my travel). The next year I went to Beulah Payne Elem (SEP'70-JUN'71) & was transferred early-on from a 5th-grade class to a 5th/6th-grade-combo class (Ms Munson's class): I spent the 1st semester in 5th & the 2d in 6th, once again doing quite well (but now with bigger kids I was once again the runt). Made some friends once again, but certain circumstances eventually caused us to separate by high school (it's called parents telling kids who they can or can't play with -- oy!). I did fairly well at Crozier J...Expand for more
HS (SEP'71-Jun'73). Due to busing I got to meet some cool kids (& some not-so-cool ones). While I was there, Inglewood HS (about a block-or-two away) had a student race-riot which the police eventually broke up (oy! again). I also did fairly well at IHS (SEP'73-JUN'77), graduating near the top percentage of the class. Physically I still was behind the power curve -- I ran sooo slow in Sophmore Track that my own school-mates tossed things at me as I ran by. I wanted to continue with sports nontheless, but my dad had me end it (due to a perceived snub by a coach at a school function; I still think it was just an over-sight). Instead I helped out Coach Cantwell & met some mighty fine football players. Does anyone remember Coach Bankhead (another fine coach, teacher, & all-around good-guy -- he was at Crozier, then IHS, then I think he went on to coach at some college)? During my senior year I enlisted in the Marine Corps' Delayed-Entry Program (DEC'76), got my strength & speed up to par & went to Boot-Camp (SEP-DEC'77) after enjoying one last summer vacation [mostly spent in Yosemite's "High Country" at the Yosemite Mountaineering School while staying with a National Park Ranger (Donald C. Pimental), & partially spent in the Marine Corps' Devil-Pups Program for a little pre-Boot-Camp fun (I had gone to Devil-Pups the summer before as well -- it was a blast)]. I started college between regular active-duty cruises in the Corps, but that & life in the Corps is for other bios...
