Michael's Story

Life After graduating high school, I attended and graduated from UC in 1979 with a B.S. in Criminal Justice and a commission in the Air Force as a second lieutenant since I wanted to see the world and gain experience in my field. The Air Force had other plans for me and I was assigned to an air defense radar unit. I served assignments in the US and overseas in Korea, middle east and Japan. In 1985, while stationed in Northern Japan, I met and later married a beautiful Air Force nurse and we had boy and girl twins in 1987. We were transferred stateside in 1989 to Riverside Ca. In 1991, I served as Air Defense Liaison to the United Arab Emirates and coordinated airstrikes and safe passage of strike and support aircraft during the Gulf War. I left active duty in 1992 to pursue a law enforcement career and served as a San Diego County Deputy Sheriff until recalled to active duty in 1996. I decided to remain on active duty to complete my 20-year retirement and was promoted to Lieutnant Colonel in 2000. I served as commander of an operations support flight in the southeast air defense sector, Tyndall AFB Florida and later served on the sector commander's staff as the Director of Exercise and Analysis. After the terrorist attack of 9/11, I led personnel that plan and execute protection and air defense of high value targets including nuclear facilities, chemical plants, and the President of the United States when visiting or transiting the Southeast US, air defense of space shuttle launches from Kennedy Space Center, the Daytona 500, and th...Expand for more
e 2001 and 2003 Super Bowls which took place in our sector. I also designed live and simulation exercises which test and evaluate operational war plans and procedures. Academically, I graduated from USAF Squadron Officer's School, Air Command and Staff College, the USAF Air War College and earned a Masters degree in Public Administration from University of Oklahoma. In September 2005, my kids graduated from high school. My daughter is attending University of Florida majoring in Biology and my son is attending Florida State University pursuing a degree in Accounting. I retired from active duty in November 2005 with 26 years of service and after three years as a senior strategy analyst for Northrop Grumman on an Air Force contract providing combat planning support and advising in the areas of international military cooperation, I entered civil service as the Deputy Chief, International Affairs Division, Air Forces Northern. I have very eclectic interests and enjoy family activities, water sports, boating, fishing, and scuba diving. I also enjoy gourmet cooking with my wife, brewing my own beer and I'm active in my church. I'm still married to my favorite air force nurse and after 20+ years, we are still best friends and lovers. I still miss many aspects of Cincinnati life...primarily Little Kings and Skyline Chili. I doubt I will ever live there again, but plan to visit if our class ever decides to have a reunion. I'm curious what happened to many folks...friends whom I never saw again after high school. Drop me a line and say hello.
