Michael's Story

Workplace Well, everyone knows I worked at the old A & W Drive-in for most of my high school years. Gave out a lot of root beer at the back door and more than a few hamburgers, mostly to the track team or cross country team running by during a work-out. Moved to Two Guys Dept. Store in my senior year, developed a desire to catch the crooks who came into the store to steal stuff. I applied to the Oxnard Police Dept. right out of high school and was hired as a cadet... working in records division and the traffic division until I was 21. Managed to get hired as a regular officer in 1978 and hung around until they made me retire in 2002. Being a cop was really something that is very hard to explain. Most people move out of their home town or work at a Department away from where they live. I have always lived and worked in Oxnard, I felt staying here and helping make this a better place was important. I had the privelage to work plain clothes ( undercover ), detectives, both the property crimes division and the sex crimes division. In 1987 I worked as the School Liaison Officer for every school in Oxnard. Spent a lot of time on the local high school campuses helping them deal with problems that developed. Things had really changed, it would never have even been a consideration to have a police officer actually working on a campus when we were in school. Made some good friends and worked closely with the staff of Hueneme High School, I had the privelage and honor to work closely with many of the faculty members who had been my teachers and mentors.... Terry Taylor was the school principal. I would say that these were the best years of my career, I was able to help a lot of people and see them make positive changes in their lives. It was insightful to be on the campus as a trusted person and watch how dedica...Expand for more
ted the teachers and staff are. Most of them devote their lives to helping kids make it through the rest of their lives, they are the true heroes of our City. Work wasn't always a fistful of forward steps... I watched the gangs almost take over this City in the late 80's and early 90's. For the first time I actually considered moving out of the City, youth related violent crime was out of control. Instead I worked hard to help the schools take back their campuses, and in 1990 I helped the Oxnard Police Dept. establish an anti-gang unit. It wasn't as organized as larger cities but we stuck our toes in the door and pushed our way in. Things got better, youth related violent crime was cut in half and Oxnard once again felt safer. I felt an extreme sense of pride for being part of something that helped turn around my home town, I felt good letting my kids go to the local schools and wasn't worried about their safety. I had to retire in 2002, I hated it but needed to leave for my health. I didn't do a whole lot for 3 years, took care of my grandkids, sat at home and got fat. However, I saw an opportunity when I heard Fry's Electronics was opening a store in Oxnard, got into the first group of new hires and I'm now the Deliver/Installation Supervisor. It's a great place to work for a person making a "new beginning" and I'm very proud to be a member of the Fry's family. With 32 stores open and another 30+ opening within the next 5 years I have a great chance to grow with the company and enjoy working again. Retail, bah humbug! Ok, so I got tired of working long hours and not making enough money. I applied at the City of Los Angeles, LAPD, and was hired as a Background Investigator. I now help get jobs for people wanting to start a career in Law Enforcement. I'm happy to have my foot back in the door......
