Michael's Story

After graduating from Southern Illinois University in 1972, I took a job in Wichita, Kansas at KTVH-TV, the CBS affiliate there. . .I became a producer-director and worked there directing anything they threw at me including commercials and local live newscasts. . .I moved to KAKE-TV in Wichita for a time producing a live hour-long Noon show that included news, and interviews with everyone from politicians to local sports figures. . .I then went back to KTVH-TV which had been sold to new owners. . .The station call letters were changed to KWCH-TV and the new owners began a major effort to make the station Number One in the market in News ratings. . .I was hired to direct all of the newscasts, and happily our "Eyewitness News" shows became Number One in the local ratings in 1984 and we have maintained that Number One standing ever since. . .Quite a long run in first place! We also acquired the CW channel here, KSCW, and then partnered with the Spanish-language Univision channel, KDCU. . .I began directing live newscasts for all three stations. . .On a daily basis I directed newscasts at 4pm for KSCW , 5pm for KWCH, 6pm for KWCH, 8pm for KDCU, 9pm for KSCW, and 10pm for KWCH. . .Kept me pretty busy! This station has created quite a record of success here, our newscasts have won regional Emmy awards and several Edward R. Murrow awards. . .And in 2015 we won a national Edward R. Murrow award for Breaking News coverage and expanded newscasts that I directed. Unfortunately, I've never had any success finding that "special person" out there and I'm just living by myself. I've decided to add an "Update" here. I've noticed that some people who graduated from McCluer in 1971 have checked out my profile. I think some of you may have known my brother Kevin, who also graduated from McCluer in '71. Unfortunately, I have sad news about him. Kevin passed away in 2012. He dealt with several health problems that I won't go into her...Expand for more
e, but they finally overwhelmed him, and we lost Kev in June of 2012. He was married, but he and his wife Helen had no children. Kev also worked at KWCH-TV. He ran audio and was also a staff announcer. He also was the announcer on commercials produced at KWCH for local advertising agencies. Kev also loved flying, and he eventually earned his Commercial Pilot's License. Kev was smart and funny. Whenever I was mad or down about something, he would always make me laugh. I just thought I'd add this info for anyone who may have known Kevin and was wondering about him. I also spend as much time as I can on my artwork and photography. I have some drawings and photos I think I could turn into prints and possibly sell. . .Maybe that could make me a few extra bucks because. . .After 40 years as a director in local television, the last 35 in a row directing the Eyewitness News shows at KWCH-TV, I finally decided to retire. March 25, 2016 was my last day of directing. The station was sold to new owners, and the business of television production of live newscasts is changing. . .Many of the functions once performed by humans are being turned over to computerized systems, allowing stations to use a smaller staff to produce these shows. Luckily for me, this is all coming about just as I hit "retirement age". So, instead of waiting for a computer to take over my job, I decided to orchestrate my own exit. . .and retire. Actually, I'd been thinking about doing that for a while, so the sale of the station and the plans of the new owners came at just the right time for me. . .It was like the universe was telling me "Yes, it's time". So now I'm going to keep busy with a website that I've created called "thephotoartloft". It features some of my photography and artwork. At least it'll be fun focusing on those things, seeing what I can do with them, and enjoying my freedom from the crazy, stressful world of local television news.
