Michael's Story

Life After serving as the Freshman Class Vice-Pres, being on the swimming team, and generally enjoying being a teenager in Fremont in the 60's, the pressure of an abusive relationship with my step-father wore me down to the point that I left Ross after my Sophomore year and enlisted in the U.S. Army. After the shock of what I had so hastily done back in July of 1964 wore off, I managed to adjust to my new life and have a mostly enriching four year military experience. I spent 2 years in France, 1 back in the U.S. and 1 year in Vietnam. After my discharge in 1968, I tried several different jobs and finally ended up as a cop in Washington, D.C. from June 1970 to Sept. 1990. Spent the next 5 years with the Alexandria, Va. Police Department, the subsequent 5 years working security for a local school system and have continued to work in the Risk Management/Security field while learning to adjust to retirement. I am now on my third or fourth attempt at being a retiree, married (twice), have 3 children and 2 grandchildren. While still in the US Army, I managed to earn my high school diploma and have even received a Bachelors Degree in Criminal Justice over the years. I am now living in Stafford, Virginia, working part-time as a campus cop at a small area college, enjoying my family and our 2 year old Doberman, "Schatzie". es while growing up, I have been blessed in many ways in my adult life. I would love to hear from anyone from the class of '66 who might remember me. Workplace After 1 year at Chrysler's Toledo Machining Plant, I tried my hand at selling life insurance. That lasted about a year. I then moved to Pennsylvania, tried a few different things and then applied for police officer vacancies with the Reading, Pa. Police Departmant, Pa State Police, & the Washington, DC Police Dept. Somehow, I was accepted by all three but chose the Washington Department and served there for over 20 years. Retired in 1990, spent the next 5 years with the Alexandria, Va. Pd, went from there to Prince William County (Va) School Security for 5 years. I then took 2 years off and am now working part-time as a campus cop at a small local college. Military Had basic training at Ft. Knox, Kentucky in the summer & fall of 1964, followed by advanced infantry training at Ft. Dix, New Jersey. Was shipped of to France in December of '64, served there with the 256th Signal Co. in Verdun, France until 1966. Returned the the US and spent the next year at Indiantown Gap Military Reservation in Annville, Pa. This was a National Guard & Reserve Training Center. Spent my final year in Vietnam with the 1st Cavalry Divsion in An Khe in the central highlands. Was discharged in August, 1968.
