Michael's Story

Hi Friends, After BW, I went to WVU where I received a BA in Psych in 1977. I worked in that field for 3 years near Philadelphia. Then, I went back to WVU where I received a BS in Electrical Engineering in 1985. I moved to the Boston Region in 1985 saying that I'd give it 3 years. Well, I'm still near Boston. Roots developed and it is a nice area. I dislike the winters but they have been getting milder. My retirement will start here with a TBD attitude about the future. Along the way, I took other classes on technical topics. I enjoy understanding how communications systems worked. In 2011,. I received my masters in Information Assurance from Northeastern University in Boston. I enjoyed the interactive nature of the program and I miss it. I work as a senior principal systems engineer (network engineer) for General Dynamics, Basically, I have been with the same company and people since 1985. As a DoD contractor, I support the subject of secure voice and data terminals. I married in 1985 and have a daughter (born 1987) and a son (born 1992). I have come to discover how time consuming parenting is. But, as I watch them grow older, I started to wish they wouldn't. Time passes far too quickly. You never stop being a parent and time still passes too quickly. My wife of 38 years, Andrea, somehow manages to put up with me ;-) Normally, I returned to Cumberland/Ridgeley at least once a year to visit my mother. However, she passed away 2/14/2010 leaving no family in the area. Though, my extended family owns a campsite near Canaan Valley that I hope to get back to once a year will bring me through Cumberland. Then, something really unusual happened. My daughter, a wildlife biologist that has trained and worked in probably a dozen states through career, started working for ...Expand for more
the the state of VA and then took a position with the state of WV. She resides near Keyser. It is amazing to me that she is back very near to where I grew up. So, when I retire this year,, I hope to take several trips to the Cumberland area. Life is good. Ok, so there has been some bad too. But let's concentrate on the good. I have been lucky in that I have relatively good health. It takes eating right, exercise, and a good attitude. If you remember, I ran track and cross country for a few seasons at BW though I never really had a competitive spirit. (though my sports adrenaline kicked in for basketball, tennis, and handball during my college years). . I continued running into the late 90s. The knees haven't given out yet, but a hip replacement in 2014 stopped my running. Now, it's stair master to get my heart rate up. . We vacation two times a year. 1 beach vacation and 1 vacation usually in the desert SW, AZ, UT, CA, WY visiting National Parks. I have been to Yellowstone 4 times. And, I will go again whether I need it or not. Love the place. I started traveling to Europe for work in 2009.. Typically week long work trips to various countries that I extend for a few extra days. I present on technical topics, coordinate actions, learn, and assist at a multinational conference. I have to admit, I really enjoy traveling to Europe. Pictures never do justice to the experience. You never get to homesick; every country plays American music. When I go, I do take a lot of pictures. ;-) Feel free to contact me. I keep in touch with Gary White and from him, I hear of classmates that are not with us anymore. Friends that I thought I would someday reach out to are not there anymore. Frankly, I wish I had put just a little effort in keeping in touch. Write back!!!
