Michael's Story
Life
After getting my BA and MA at Alabama in 1969 (Roll Tide!), I taught for 3 years at Florida College in Tampa and then went to Tallahassee for my doctorate at FSU (awarded 1975).
Taught 4 years at a college in Chicago, got fired, then took off on a motorcycle for Alaska in 1979.
Lived in a cabin in the bush for a year (my first REAL education), taught part-time at the University in Anchorage for 3 years, and was fortunate enough to get a second chance in academe when I was appointed Assistant Professor of English here in 1984.
Hope I've made the most of that "second chance," having published just enough to get tenure and make full professor in 1993.
Married the University's Poet-in-Residence in 1996 -- happiest year of my life, even though the marriage ended in 1997.
Now I have only 2 passions: (1) the classroom, where the youth and mental vigor of my students keeps me fee...Expand for more
ling young; and (2) the Alaskan summers, which are glorious, even though short (like all glory).
Actually, I live for those summers, when I'm a frequent flier (in a small float plane) to various remote lakes and streams in the Alaska wilderness, for several 3-7-day fishing trips per summer -- usually for Arctic Grayling or Rainbow Trout, though sometimes for Dolly Varden or Salmon (mainly Kings, Reds, or Pinks). Usually I stay at a U.S. Forest Service cabin (so that I can stand up and be dry [as well as mosquito-free] while I cook my meals). Often I go alone, though I prefer to take a friend. My two best friends, Keith Major and Jerry Dean (a 1965 Woodlawn graduate), have accompanied me a number of times. Wish I could have more guys (or gals) like them from Woodlawn who would come to Alaska and join me on my expeditions. Where are you Chuck and Kris and John and Danny and Lucien?
