Michael's Story
Life
For the last fourteen years I've lived a never ending summer in Honolulu, Hawaii. I first came here in August 1994 with my parents and brother Mark (class of '84) for a two week vacation. As soon as I stepped off the plane I knew this would be my home for the rest of my life. After those 15 wonderful days were over I went back home, sold everything I owned, had RK surgery on my eyes so I'd be 20/20 and hopped on the next plane to Hawaii. I didn't know anyone here or have a job but sometimes you just have to take big risks to get big rewards. Many people said I wouldn't last 6 months here. Almost a decade and a half later later I wonder if those people are still miserable in Yakima, Washington. I signed on at a temp agency and got a part time...Expand for more
job at the local phone company (then GTE Hawaiian Tel which later became Verizon Hawaii and now Hawaiian Telcom). I worked my way up from being a part time customer service rep to helping oversee 200 employees bring in millions of dollars a year in revenue (GTE merged with Bell Atlantic to form Verizon). I'm still single and very much enjoying it. I was a late bloomer but have more than made up for it in the last few years. I've been blessed to have dated many beautiful women from all over the world. Not bad for someone who never had a girlfriend all through high school. ;) I challenge each of you to dream big but more importantly ACT on it. You'll be amazed at what you can do when you try.
