Michael's Story

Michael Johnston was born in Wichita Falls, Texas and raised in Burleson, Texas. Each summer of his formative years, grade school continuing through high school, he honed his people skills working with his father in route sales. These years were noteworthy because they provided a unique perspective of American culture not typically experienced by young men during America's time of segregation. Michael married his high school sweetheart soon after high school. After volunteering for the United States Army, he spent the next four years in the Infantry working in Small Arms Repair and as Training NCO. It was during this time that his daughters were born, one in Hawaii and one in Colorado. After his tour of duty in the Army, Michael and family returned to Fort Worth, Texas. He spent the next nine years in sales and sales management. He was recognized for his achievements and moved around the DFW metroplex to help underachieving stores reorganize and become profit centers. After a lifetime in sales, Michael was offered the opportunity to transition to a technical field. Recognizing this as an opportunity to use drafting skills attained in high school and college, he began a new career in the Defense Industry. He began this new career incorporating engineering changes into hardware drawings and supporting engineering proposals for the F-111 and the F-16. Upon completing his Bachelor¿s degree in Management and Computer Information Systems, Michael took on additional duties. This included responsibility for capital assets budgeting and inventory management. Michael was also given the responsibility for facilitating the transition from the Microsoft DOS environment on the 8088 platform to the MS Windows 3.11 environment on the 386. This included the transition from Word Perfect to the MS Office suite. It was during this time that Michael completed his MBA in Management. After surviving multiple reductions in force events, Michael was provided the opportunity to take complete advantage of his education and experience. He moved to Software Quality Assurance. It was here that Michael was able to explore the bigger picture of F-16 development. He worked with groups assigned to develop software for flight simulat...Expand for more
ion, mission support, maintenance training, aircraft radar, and various Line Replaceable Unit maintenance support products. These groups included both in-house development groups and software vendors. Never one to miss an opportunity for growth, Michael seized the opportunity to expand into technology management. He moved to a rapidly expanding company that specialized in electronic systems for a vast array of fixed and rotary wing aircraft, ground vehicles, trainers and simulators as well as command, control and communication systems. A change in which Michael would need all of the skills and experience¿s in his repertoire. Michael's willingness to accept, adapt, and succeed in challenging and varied technical environments was significant during the development of his company's first exclusively American engineered product. He has seen a substantial broadening of his experience as his company has grown from a small build-to-print organization employing less than three hundred to a medium sized, multi-site, multi-capability organization. Michael's broad experience collaborating with executive management, technical personnel, customers, suppliers, end users, and support personnel during all phases of the product life cycle helped his company develop new processes to meet new needs. These processes were instrumental in enabling his company to transition from ISO 9001:1994 to ISO 9001:2000 and AS 9100. The highlight of Michael¿s career has been in helping his company develop an engineering process capability that successfully completed an independent appraisal for the Capability Maturity Model - Integration at Maturity Level 3. Michael continues to actively participate in cross-functional process improvement teams while maintaining his role as Design Quality Engineering Manager. He continues his education through participation in the American Society for Quality, lead auditor training, CMMI Intermediate training, and various SCAMPI appraisal team training events. For pleasure, Michael has coached youth soccer and volunteered at his local elementary school. Michael retired in 2019 and is living the good life in Weatherford.
