Michael's Story
Life
I have a beautiful 23 year-old daughter that is working as an office manager and doing very well. I was diagnosed with spinal cord cancer
at the age of 24. After 9 months, 8 surgeries, and 7 weeks with spinal meningitis (where I lost all mental functioning), I finally was released from U of M Hospital. My daughter was 23 months old when I left the hospital and my goal was to live long enough so she would remember me. I have been very fortunate to attend her marriage and have an adorable 13 month old granddaughter. No doctor would have ever given me any possibility of
surviving as long as I have.
April 24th will mark the 22nd anniversary of my discharge from the hospital. After living two decades as a quad and havin...Expand for more
g numerous brushes with death, I try to embrace each and every day as a gift.
I have a remarkable support system with a terrific family and great friends. I have been very happily divorced for 17 years, but still appreciate the help my ex gave me during my transition period after my
illness.
I would not wish my long and painful battle on my worst enemy, yet
it has defined who I am. My primary goal is to make someone smile,
laugh, or provide inspiration each and every day. Another goal is for
visitors to my house to leave in better spirits than they have arrived.
I take much pride in these goals and accomplish them consistently.
One final thought: Live and Love each day as if it's your last, but
hopefully it will not be.
