Michael's Story

Life 06/23/2007 I spent the first 15 years after high school drinking, smoking, doing as many drugs as I could consume and generally trying to see if I could kill myself with such indulgence.I couldn't. Then,in 1989,I went into Proctor Hospital for drug and alcohol rehab. It was the best life choice I've made to this point.I have been straight and sober for 18 years and gave up tobacco 15 years ago. I have now given up all my vices except sex and figure if I have to keep one,This is the best one to keep! I have come to appreciate life's special moments,I have taken the time to relax and enjoy this journey that I know will end all too soon. Each day is a blessing and I am taking the time to live each day to it's fullest. I have a wonderful wife of 26 + years.I have two great kids,a daughter,25 and a son 22.Both are a blessing in my life. I have a great job that I enjoy, working in the maintenance department of District 150 schools. I am the chairman of our union committee. I am a member of the Rainforest Action Network,an organization working to save what's left of the worlds rainforests and the old growth forests throughout the world. ...Expand for more
I also support Farm Aid.Trying to help stop factory farms and help the family farmers that are left as they are the backbone of this land we all love. I am in 3 computer baseball simulation leagues. I love to read and listen to music. I have been writing poetry for about 3 1/2 years and find it a great way to express my feelings and relax. I enjoy going to baseball games, concerts, art shows, sitting on the front porch reading, writing poetry, playing my guitar and taking walks. We have lived in Northern Virginia,North Carolina and have been back in Peoria since 1988. In short,my life is great. Not being very materialistic,I have more than I ever wanted or thought I would have. I have learned that happiness is not having what you want, but wanting what you have. I just continue to roll along on this journey, finding I don't have the time to do all I want, but taking the time to do all I can. Wondering just what it is that I shall leave here that is of any significance,or if it even matters.Perhaps...but who knows. Would love to hear from anyone who actually took the time to read this,as I think you may be in need of some serious help! Peace
