Michael's Story
Life
I live in Toronto, where I look for work as an actor, teach First Aid & CPR, and coach employees over the phone on their communication skills. In the summer of 2003, I did a one-man show at the Toronto Fringe Festival called "Judgement", which was an artistic, if not financial success.
School
I learned to speak excellent French at Ecole Bilingue Notre Dame de Sion, because my second grade teacher, Mlle Kakon, was just gorgeous. She was Lebanese, and had studied at the Sorbonne, so we all learned perfect Parisian French. At Selwyn House, I did everything: excelled in studies, played all kinds of sports, learned debating, and also to act on one's values and think critically. I had an amazing year at St. Paul's School in 1976-7 where I sat and completed 8 "O" levels, but also learned to row and sang Mozart's Ave Verum Corpus in St. Paul's Cathedral. In Grade 11 at Selwyn House I discovered girls, and my studies fell off considerably.
College
I started my college career at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, where I did not a lot of studying but did get bitten by the theatre bug; I ddi "Equus", "You're ...Expand for more
a Good Man Charlie Brown", and "Jesus Christ Superstar". After being advised to take a year off, I got some work in Montreal and then began to do community theatre. This led to studies in Musical Theatre at the Atelier de Theatre Musical Quebecois, run by choreographer Peter George, doing "The Music Man" at the Banff Centre in summer 1982, a year of part-time studies in theatre at Concordia University, and then a year of serious training at The Neighborhood Playhouse in New York, where I discovered how important serious acting was to me, and met my famous relatives Robert Whitehead & Zoe Caldwell. I wasn't inviteed back for a second year, so I continued my studies in Meisner Technique at the New School of Drama in Toronto. Since then I have continued to study acting and singing with teachers and at studios around Toronto. I did an intensive at Equity Showcase Theatre in the summer of 1987 with Patsy Rodenburg and Rosemary Dunsmore, who has become a mentor for me. I spent the summer of 1989 in Vancouver at the National Voice Intensive doing Linklater voice work, and cementing a long term friedship with Linda Racine.
