Michael's Story

Whuzzzup, y'all? Enjoying early retirement from career in organized labor/transportation, was an Amtrak Ticket Agent at Columbia, then Charleston and finally Florence. Got involved with our labor union, the Brotherhood of Railway and Airline Clerks, and served as local chairman for the southeast region (SC-NC-GA-VA-WV), then moved on to General Representative at Chicago for about a year and a half, then my dad died and I went back to Columbia working for the railroad again for a while. Decided Columbia was getting too big and finally settled in Florence. Got bored and got active with the union again, became General Chairman of its Amtrak System Division, with offices in Rockville, Maryland, just outside Washington. All together I was in the railroad industry for 23 years. Actually, I retired on disability, since I was finally diagnosed with narcolepsy at age 36. Remember how I used to always sleep through classes? Turns out that was the reason. Sue Elliott, Thelma Humphrey and all my other teachers used to tell me I was just lazy. (Remember the locker room under the old gym? The laundry room used to be a great place to hide and sleep on a cart full of towels fresh out of the dryer!) BTW, that reminds me... anybody remember Coach Chetti? Talked to him a few years ago, at that time he owned a restaurant and bar in Richmond, VA. In 1992 the Florence County Republican Party needed somebody to fill out their ticket and asked me to run for county coroner (how ironic, since my nickname back in school was Un...Expand for more
dertaker!) Thank god I lost. (1992 was NOT a Republican year.) Gov Campbell told me once I was the only labor Republican he had ever hear of. I reminded him that Ronald Reagan had been prez of the Screen Actors Guild, but he reminded me that at that time, Reagan was a Democrat. Well, shortly thereafter, I came to my senses and became a Democrat. Still am. For about a year and a half, (2006-2008) tried a second career as Director of Elections & Voter Registration for Florence County. Alas, this led to a slight misunderstanding between me and the Railroad Retirement Board, which is still pending resolution (maybe I won't go to jail, but if Martha Stewart and Thomas Ravenel can stand it, I guess I could too.) Politics (I think they found out I was a Democrat) and sleepiness led to irreconcilable differences with the county election commission, so I am now happily retired again. Very happily. Worst mistake I ever made was trying to go back to work. I guess I was just bored. But, won't be making that mistake again! Anyway, send me some e-mail if you want to, just don't put anything weird in the subject line cuz I'll prob think it's spam and delete it. The address is... well, it seems I can't put my e-mail address in here or the wonderful Classmates Content Team will hide my content! So, I will just say that I am also a subscriber to america on line (I put that space in the on purpose), and my screen name is michaeljy. The fact that you've made it here tells me that you know what to do. Thanks. Mike
