Michelle's Story

Life After Kamiakin, I graduated from WSU in Communications. A month later I went to Spain where I resided for 5 years in Madrid and also the Canary Islands. I finally learned Spanish Mr. Kraus! Then I moved to Seattle where most of my friends were living. Many of them were in bands and or computers. I got a job with a start up company called Nextel International as a bilingual assistant to the VP and after each foreign company got started with its own domestic Nextel, the company desolved. I then tried to find work in documentaries, which I had been studying on the side at UW. I had a few ventures with that, but anyway...someday! Then I went to work as a real estate agent with Windermere in Seattle and had a staging company called Seattle Home Stagers that was a great compliment to selling houses. I´m a little obsessed with decoration and design. During this period of my life I was single and enjoyed taking walks down to the beach with my dog, eating sushi by myself, and watching friends perform their music from time to time. That´s when my mom invited me to accompany her to Monterrey, Mexico where I unexpectedly met the one I was waiting for,my prince, just when I had no hopes of living up to my expectations. So, after flying from Seattle to Mexico every month for a year, I sold everything and decided to give it a try. Long distance relationships get old and tragic. I have always been the adventurous type and after having been out of the states once, my point of view had changed towards the world and I was left with this kind of yearning to live outside the US. I never imagined I would end up living in Mexico, but here I am almost seven years later. Now I am married and have a four year old girl and a seven month boy. I am currently teaching english to executives, do translations for companies, and work as an interpreter. I have adop...Expand for more
ted three more dogs, because there is a huge inhumane streetdog population here. Life is interesting here and there are many positives, but more recently the drug cartels have taken over. There are shootouts in the middle of the city all the time. Sometimes the shootouts are between police and the military which the government has called in because ALL of the police are corrupt and being paid off by the drug cartels. People are murdered and/or disappear everyday. We in Monterrey are living in a very dangerous situation. In light of this, I no longer deal with the local officials or the police department in any attempt to make any differences where I live. For instance the head of police department, a person to whom I had directed requests dealing with security problems in my neighborhood was just removed from his post after his daughter was arrested last month in relation to one of these shootouts. She was part of the drug cartel and house was loaded with illegal guns and amo. I have really come to appreciate the opportunities that all American people have, I´m more careful about how I spend my money and I enjoy it more when I do. I realized that in Seattle, I was more concerned about money and the things I wanted to achieve, which was ironic because I spent less time at achieving my dreams and more time on working to pay for my car and expanding my business. I needed to venture. I knew that what I was going to do was somewhere far away from all that. However, whenever I miss Walmart, I mean the US of A, I just drive a couple of hours to the border and stay the night in Laredo, Texas. There, I buy presents for the many fiestas here, have a good hamburger, eat some good old American doughnuts, oh, and you can´t beat the Vietnamese manicures you get in the US either. Something I don´t miss about the US is reality TV and Paris Hilton.
