Michelle's Story
Life
Hello all. It's been a long time. I guess I'll start with my life after graduation. I went to IPFW until 1992. No diploma. I really regret that. Family life seem more appealing to me. Anyhow, I married Dan Jaquay in 1994. We had two kids. A boy named Colton. He is 12 and was born in 1995. A girl named Jami. She is 10 and was born in 1997. We divorced in 1999. I remarried Mark Fansler in 2001, and we had a boy in 2001. His name is Devon and is six years old. We divorced in 2007. May of 2004, I was diagnosed with MS. When I got my diagnosis, I was using a quad cane. By late fall, I was using a wheeled walker. In March of 2005, I was sentenced to my life in an electric wheelchair. I move to Drake Terrace Apartments in 2005. Thankfully, I've been able to remain living independently. In January 2006, I severely burnt my legs with scalding water. They were second degree burns. After that things really went downhill. I ended up not being able to transfer myself and not being able to use my arms. It took a few months for my legs to heal but now I see they healed quite nicely. I started getting home health aides to come in for four hours in the morning and four hours at night. So they help me out of bed in the morning, and they help me into bed at night. After I got burnt, besides losing my arm movement, my vision we...Expand for more
nt really bad and it looked like I was looking through wax paper. I also had two surgeries in 2006. One being at hysterectomy and the other was to get an ITB. That stands for intrathecal baclofen. Baclofen is the muscle relaxer. I have to take. I was up to taking seven to eight pills every day. The ITB is a pump they surgically insert into the abdomen. A tube goes from there, to my spine, which has a catheter in my spine. The purpose of this is to give me a continual flow of my muscle relaxer throughout my body all day long. Before I got that I was taking 17 pills a day. After I got it, I only took three a day. Obviously, that help tremendously! This year, I've gotten my own power chair and my eyes have had two operations. In April, I received a cornea transplant in my left eye, unfortunately it was from a 23-year-old. In August, I received the cornea transplant in my right eye, this one was from a 65-year-old. Just recently, my specialists released me to get a pair of glasses. You have no idea what excitement and tears I shed! I was so excited to be able to see the fall colors this year. With my life being this way, things get better all the time. I'm very thankful that I am here and get to see my children on a regular basis. I love to hear from everyone. Please keep me in your prayers and feel free to contact me anytime!
