Michelle's Story
You know, I really like this opportunity to write and to read the writings of others. I just wrote my aunt in Canton and commented on not how time ticks along, but gallops. It's one of those funny realizations, and I remember when I (we) was/were just 21, and a DJ on a top 40 radio station in Cleveland made reference to the year 2000. Forty-seven years old seemed so old and far away back then , and I just laughed at the thought of the 21st century--kind of Twighlight Zonish. Now look, 2000 has come and gone by 10 years. Whew!
I guess that's why I am impatient to live life and to live it with some sort of purpose. Germany, South Carolina and Kentucky have all been home at one point or another, and I hope to make China home for at least two years of teaching. It's a short term goal. Presently I teach anthropology courses for the University of South Carolina Sumter. I am a trained folklorist and do independent work for the SC Arts Commission and the McKissick Museum. Storytelling is another big part of my...Expand for more
life, whether I am telling stories or listening to them.
Life has been good, with significant ups and downs, especially in the recent passing of my dear husband from prostate cancer. He was a very good man. I have five grown children--four girls and one boy--their significant others, and nine grandchildren. It's a family of beautiful individuals, inside and out, and each of them is a great source of joy. My parents, who still live in South Carolina, are in fragile health; my sister is in Michigan with her family. Her son, Michael just left for his third tour to Iraq. God Bless him and everyone else on every side.
Do I relax, you may ask?--kind of--by doing very natural activities in natural settings--kayak, walk, garden, cook, bake, clean, read, write, listen to music, dance, learn something new, travel, hang out with my family, keep in touch with dear friends, and give thanks for every new day. A good beer now and again works pretty well, too. Oh, I forgot--I love to play cards, and no, I don't gamble.
