Mickey's Story

I was born December 11, 1949 at 5:12 a.m. at Mobile Infirmary, I haven't liked getting up early ever since then. I attended Kate Shepard Elementary, Azalea Road Junior High, Davidson High, Yancey State, Faulkner State, University of South Alabama, a few classes at Springhill College and finally Troy State University at Pensacola N.A.S. for my final degrees, Andrea Sue Smith and I married May 17, 1969 & have endured each other ever since. I have always loved muscle cars as some of you may remember my red '58 Impala convertible w/348, tri-power carbs, etc. Later, in late 1971, I was minding my own business street racing a SS454 Chevelle, when a State Trooper in, at that time, an AMC Javelin w/401 motor, disrupted the proceedings and began to chase me for several miles at 2:00 a.m. on a full moonlit early winter's night. I lost him on I-10 before the Mississippi State line. While me and my '70 Road Runner, 440 six barrel were napping for the next few hours until things quieted down (woods of the rest stop), I got to thinking of how much fun the Police must have, at times, at their job. I knew quite a number of Officers from our family business of chrome plating or bluing their guns and other items. About a week after the chase, the State Trooper that had chased me & knew my car, a hard to spot lime green '70 Roadrunner called "Green Slime", approached me at the parking lot of "Chick's", a local drive in fast food place where fast cars also gathered to talk up races. The trooper who as it turned out I knew, told me "Mickey, if you insist on staying up riding around mo...Expand for more
st all night long, driving fast and looking for excitement, instead of you winding up in jail or a hospital, why don't you get into law enforcement?" I took his advice, applied for the Mobile P.D. I was hired, trained and on the first day and several times after reporting to Patrol, I drove my '71 Hemi 'Cuda w/shaker hood to work until the Captain of Patrol Division asked me not to because it was making the windows at the precinct rattle, besides he said, "it just didn't look proper". BTW, we now have a 2016 Challenger Hellcat...! Anyway, I survived for nearly 30 years w/MPD before retiring in January of 2001. After about a year of resting, & 911 happened, I went with Dauphin Island Police as their Investigator for over 10 years, then retired again, so I survived about 40 years of law enforcement. Ann and I had 2 daughters, Angie, who became a Police Officer for several years and Becky, who worked at the 911 call center for a while. They each had 2 girls & a boy, so we have 6 grandchildren all together. I never gave up my obsession for muscle or classic cars and never will, We have had quite a few through the years. Ann loves them too, but she puts our cherry head conure, the bloodhound & basset hounds in her priority. We are grateful for what we had and have, are happy and in reasonably good health. Now, as of July 29, 2022 we have our 1st great grand child, Josie Nicholson who just like her mom Brittany (our 1st grand child), she has beautiful bright red hair & bright blue eyes looking just like her mom when she was a baby...! We hope all of you are too.
