Micki's Story

Life I recently became Grandma for the 7th time, My youngest, a boy, Michael, 20yrs. just had his first son also named Michael, he is the first of my children, or any one in my family for that matter, to name a child after them selves. I have 2 daughters, Bobbie, 32, has 1 boy, Dakota, 5, and 2 girls, Madisyn Shyan, 2 and Morgan Bailee, 1. My youngest daughter Brandi also has 3, Brooke, 11, Brandon, 4, and Megyn, 1. They of course are all beautiful. I am called Abuelita (grandma in spanish) because I live in California which is predominately Hispanic nowadays, and the g-kids readily think of me and don't have to ask " which g-ma"? Nor do I have to go by my last name with them, this feels much more personal. I do not get to see my beautiful babies as often as I would like to, as travel gets quite expensive, If I fly I then have to rent a vehicle, and that gets pricey when you stay for 3 weeks or more, and if I drive while gas prices are so high........ well we are all effected by these expenses. Living here and having family there has afforded my children, g-kids and myself, many opportunities to travel to places we might not have otherwise have gone to such as: Oklahoma, Kansas, Texas, Arizona, Grand Canyon, New Mexico. Mexico, Many cities throughout California. Also Utah: Bryce Canyon, Zion National, Salt Lake, Moab. When traveling the northern route we have visited such places as Lake Tahoe, Yosemite, Yellostone, Mt. Rushmore, The Canyon Lands, the Badlands, The Black Hills, the Trail made famous by the Ingalls of Little House on the Prarie, from DeSmet, SouthDakota, to Walnut Grove, and Sleepy Eye, Minnesota. I feel my children and I have been privileged to see this beautiful country that we live in, and have not even seen half of what there is to see. I hope to continue traveling, as time seems to get shorter with each passing day, and everything I can share with my family will get added to my memory book of the most precious times spent in my life. To me there is nothing like the excitement and anticipation of things to be seen through the eyes and hearts of my children and their children. Who would have ever thought I would have done so many wonderful things and had 7 grand children by the age of 51. Oh I know there are others that have done more and at a younger age but, for me these are great accomplishments, as I never wanted to be anything more or less than the all important wife and MOM. I Have been slowly retireing from my Tile setting business as my knees have decided that I will not be kneeling on them any more, sometimes just walking is a painful task. What a time to...Expand for more
find out how important knees are, just when your gonna need them for getting thru the rest of the "over the hill" life. :} About 2 yrs. ago we moved about 80 miles north of Santa Barbara, putting me in a better place to resume my photography business and with the new Digital cameras, things are really looking up. I am back to wearing my camera around my neck on a daily basis, so the next time you see me be ready to smile and say:I loved my High School days. School My biggest and only "crush" was my best friends cousin Hal Reiger, he never had a crush on me, he did however like me as a friend and confidante, he would tell me all his girlfriend problems and I would listen and advise. how often does that happen in school ;) I would have to say that I didn't particularly feel "inspired" by any of my teachers there but I did enjoy Mr. Kidney and Mr. Gilchrist. My funniest times were in Mr. Strouses science class, we caused so much trouble laughing and cutting up ......I got kicked out of class a few times. One year I got ink on the back of poor Mark Van Winkle's shirt and his parents called mine and we had to have his shirt cleaned... it seemed like such a big deal then. I guess I would do most of it all over again, my years at Burnham were my fun years. Workplace The listed work place was my last place of employment in Ohio. My main and most important work was raising a family so I only worked when I wanted to, to bring in extra income. Hertzfelds was the first place in over 13 yrs. I worked because I had to support myself and child. Some of my prior forms of employment included My own Photography Studio, 2 Party Stores, Mobile home rental mgmt., Cleaning for airport facilities, Night Club mgmt., Bartender(4night clubs)1 in Fla., Construction laborer in Fla., Bowling Alley in Fla, Waitressing(3resturants), Babysitting, Soda jerk. When I moved to California I worked as an Office Mgr. for 3yrs. while working also in a machine shop, running mills, lathes, set ups, teardowns, tapping, program data entry and various jobs. I then went to work as a tile and grout repair person eventually breaking away and starting my own tile setting and grout repair business. I love the work although the older I get the physically more demanding the work feels, it is hard work and I will soon retire myself back to my photography which is my true love. Living as close to the well known Arts Acadamy, Brooks Institute, as I do, starting a Photography business is very competative, and difficult. As my work becomes recognized I'm sure I will have enough to do to keep me busy and content for the remainder of my years.
