Mickie's Story

Hi Everyone, I will have been married for thirty-nine years in February, to my high school sweetheart, Geoff Boldt. We have one son, Christopher who will turn thirty-eight on December 18th. I am currently employed as a Customer Financial Services Specialist for one of the largest international candy, food and pet food manufacturers in the world - MARS North America(just a few miles Southeast of Los Angeles). I have been with this company for nearly nine years. The department that I work in handles customer credit/collections. Our customers range from Wal Mart and Kroeger down to the smallest Mom and Pop outfits. I am a Lead Person/Trainer in the department, providing expertise, support and guidance to the other members of my team, reporting to a National Finance Manager. I have handled the Costco and Safeway accounts and am currently a Key User for the new computer system that we will go live with in the Spring. They told us in April two years ago that the pet food unit of the business was moving to Tennessee and the food business unit would remain here in the West. The candy business unit is on the East coast. After the dust settled (this company has been around for a very long time and some employees have been here twenty-five or thirty years) and the shock wore off, different departments were given "no sooner than" dates (they would not be let go sooner than that date). We were also told we would be given generous severance packages and help in finding other employment. My particular department is a "central service", meaning we service all three business units. We were given until at least the spring of 2008 and have since been told that we may remain here along with th...Expand for more
e food business unit indefinitely. Never a dull moment in the business world, eh? My previous employment experience was in the field of Home Health Care (visiting nurse service). I started in Home Health Care as a secretary & receptionist, thirty years ago. Having only a high-school education, my options were limited. However, this job turned out to be the beginning of a twenty-year career in the field. Through increasing knowledge of the business, curiosity and a lot of good fortune and great managers, I rose through the ¿ranks¿ to become a billing expert and a collection specialist with increasing responsibility. My last position prior to my current one was as Regional Business Manager for the largest not for profit home health agency in Los Angeles County, managing and training staff in several satellite offices throughout Southern California. I also developed a billing and collection manual for the company. My current employer requires at the minimum, a Bachelor¿s Degree to advance any further than my current position. Needless to say, it has been many years since I graduated from high school and I have been hesitant to consider trying to obtain a degree at this late stage in my life. They encourage and assist employee¿s who wish to accomplish this goal and perhaps further their career with the company. It would be very difficult to pass up this opportunity; therefore, I am delighted to be able to obtain my degree on-line with the University of Phoenix. Although I was, at first, quite nervous about taking such a big step, I feel that this is the right time for me. I have been gaining confidence with each class and am very excited about getting closer to my degree.
