Mike's Story

Life Greetings. Hope all is well in the life of the folks from Blair, Class of 79. Quick synopsis of life since graduating Blair: PCC: 79 -82, Army Reserve 80-85 USC: 83-85 Army Officer (Active Duty): 85-94 DOD Civilian (Computers): 94-97; dual career with Army Reserve Technician at Columbia College: 97-99 U of MN Computer Help Desk: 99-01 DOD Civilian (Servers): 01-04 Army Reserve: 94-present Drury University: 97-99 Back to Active Duty with the Army (2003-2005) Operation Iraqi Freedom 2003-2004 Joint Staff CMO planner in Korea (2004-2005) Just retired from the Army Reserve in January 2009. When we were needed - we were there! Resource Management and Agreements Analyst in Alaska for the Dept of Defense 07-Present Got Married in 92 to a wonderful lady; no kids, although we have cats that we treat as kids. Laura, my wife, is in the Army, so I follow her around now. We met and married while we were both on active duty - I took the Army's Voluntary Separation Incentive program and have continued on in the Army Reserve, rising up to the Lt Col level. Our wedding was held in Heidelberg Castle in Germany and was absolutely awesome and full of great memories! We have had the good fortune to live in Texas, Oklahoma, Georgia, Germany, Missouri, Minnesota, New York (West Point), Korea, and now Alaska and travel throughout much of the world. School Enjoyed the challenges of High School immensely, although I kind of felt like the awkward duckling and never felt really comfortable around the ladies. I envied those who could walk up to beauties like Yvonne Wing, Chris Castro, Nancy Turner, and Katie Peterson without missing a beat. I didn't do well with that until I turned 28 and had a few years experience under my belt. I do remember being on the local government board as a senator at large and working with many great folks including (but not limited to) John Owen, John Marsh, John Kennedy, and others. I enjoyed playing video games with the likes of Tom Henley, Kerwin Sato, and Phillip Weiss. I really enjoyed Choir, although I could not sing or dance very well, as some of my peers pointed out repeatedly. Looking back, I wish some of my peers had taken some time to work with me a bit more - maybe I could have been better coordinated. Thanks to Chris, Diane, and Linda Wittry who helped me as much as they could. Mr. Coday's acting classes were a blast, and I appreciate his mentorship in so many areas of my life, as he challenged on to greater heights. I also really enjoyed Mr. Gardner's English and Art classes, as they helped me learn some valuable and creative skills. I enjoyed all of the church-sponsored activities, as well as working at Macabob Toys, all those years ago! College Attended PCC, where I was involved in student government and public speaking competitions. Won Bronze and Silver at Nationals and earned an Army ROTC Scholarship after a successful two years at PCC. Went on the USC, where I majored in Communications and graduated in 1985 with a short break for Army Reserve service in the middle. My roommate during my first year was John Yuen, and I often saw Diane Wittry and Melba Wu around campus - sorry for not being more talkative. USC was a wonderful experience, including living on campus, Army ROTC, student council, and being an RA for one of the off campus apartments during my senior year. Went back to school in 1997 at Drury University in Missouri and earned two additional degrees in Psychology and Sociology and am continuing to study in various fields, including International Relations and Military History. Military Have served in the Military since 1982, when I enlisted as an AG soldier serving at the LA MEPs. Obtained my Commission through ROTC in 1985 at USC and went to work as an Infantry Officer at Ft Hood (TX). In 1990 I transferred from Infantry into Telecommunications as a Signal Officer and served at Ft Hood, Ft Gordon (GA), Pirmasens, Kaiserslautern, and Mannheim, Germany, where I ran a telephone, computer networking and telecommunications backbone network for an area the size of Massachuttes. In 1999 I became a Civil Affairs officer, holding many jobs, including senior level management and disaster relief operations planner with the 82nd Airborne during OIF-1 from Feb 2003 to...Expand for more
April 2004. Served as a senior level planner and trainer for our Korean allies in Korea from 2004-2005. Now I support the US Army as a DoD Civilian in Alaska. One thing about the Army has been the ability to travel the world, meet new people, and make friends (I relinquished the "and kill them T-Shirt" in 1990). TRAVELS: We have been throughout Europe, to Africa, throughout Asia, across Australia, the Middle East, and throughout America and Canada. We love to explore, meet new people, dig into cultures, and see new sites. Highlights include the Red Center (Australia), Angor Wat (Far East), Vietnam, the Great Wall (China), Japan, Ilse de Goree (Senegal), Denali (Mt McKinley) Alaska, and the DMZ in Korea. We have explored Buddist Temples, worshipped in Korean, German, Swiss, and French throughout the world, and it is a great experience. Our future goals include the Mayan and Egyptian pyramids, some of the Hawaiian volcanoes, and reuniting with new and former friends when we get back to California! Please drop a line when you have time and remember the best times are still ahead of us! IMPORTANT THINGS IN LIFE: A great wife who has constantly introduced me to new and exciting endeavors. Laura is the girl I prayed about for several years. She has introduced me to pets, to new culinary delights, to exploring some of the French portions of our history and most of all to a deeper relationship with a person and with God. I never really had pets growing up. So now that I have been introduced to my little furry friends, I just can't seem to get enough. Laura has introduced me to cats, and they are really remarkable animals. I see personalities and moods, I see love and jealousy, and most of all I see friendship that is unconditional. While we were in Missouri and I had my mouth wired shut and was on deaths' door step - the cats stayed with me beaming good energy into me. I was also blessed by the local priest and had a wonderful wife who treated me with lots of tasty ground up foods turned into shakes. However, the most interesting part of this saga was the concern that cats showed and how they stayed with me day and night until I was better (about a six week ordeal). As I have studied this attraction between the species, I have noticed it in birds, bears, dogs, and even children. I really believe there is more than meets the eye when dealing with our environment at a fundamental (energetic) level. I hope I can continue to contribute good "CHI" to the life force of those around me and to watch it flow into me as well. Some people have said hey that's Buddism, I just say nah - it is giving love back where it is gained from. RELIGION: During my high school years I was a pretty boring Baptist - not that it wasn't interesting and fun being a Baptist, I was just brought up with so many things I was taught not to do. No dancing, no beer, no whatever - it was a life dedicated to spartan Christian living. The only problem was that I wasn't exactly sure how to live that way. In 1990, I had a life changing event and was invited to explore the Catholic faith. I gained a deeper understanding of a personal relationship with Christ and God. This took the form of a 4 year journey through the Right of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA). I took time to examine my faith and see why I believed certain things and to explore these things through prayer and meditation. I joined the Catholic Church in 1994 and started a faith journey with Jesus and have actively shared that throughout my life with others. It is great to have caring and wonderful Father who looks out for me. I have seen His hand at work in my life and His protection on the field of combat - I hope to one day share this with those of you who would like to hear. ACTIVITIES: As I have mentioned above I really enjoy traveling and meeting new people. However being in places like Alaska, you get to explore the wonders of cross country skiing, snowshoeing, snow machining, dog sledding, and so much more during the summer months. Laura and I have been having a blast wherever we have been stationed and I think it because she is so open to trying exciting new endeavors. I am blessed to have such a wonderful and caring wife. God Bless, Mike Bozeman
