Michael's Story
Life
After becoming a parent in 1994 and subsequently divorcing in 1995, my son, Cody, and I moved from Texas to Kansas. I met my 2nd wife, Amy (and Dominic), and we were married in 1997. Since that time we lived in Ulysses until 2004 and added one more child, Noah, to the family in 2001.
We were living in Holcomb, KS, which is 45 miles northeast of Ulysses until 2007. I worked in the Garden City school district working as the district assessment and math curriculum coordinator. Amy was working as a counselor with community corrections.
In 2007 we accepted positions in the Valley Center school district, which is 10 miles north of Wichita. Amy worked as a School Counselor and I was the Director of Learning Services.
Unfortunately, Amy and I divorced in 2008 and we both relocated to the metro Denver area.
School
After attending Riceville Community High School for my 9th - 11th grade years, I moved to Ulysses, Kansas, where I graduated in 1988.
Although I did get to experience some great things in Ulysses during my senior year such as being part of a nationally reknowned high school choir and having a lead in the musical "Annie Get Your Gun," I really missed graduating with the people who had been my classmates for 12 years in Riceville. To this day I consider that part of my life to ...Expand for more
be one of my greatest treasures.
College
I went to college at West Texas A & M University from 1988 - 1992 and received a B.S. in Mathematics. In May of 2004, I obtained my M.S. in Educational Administration from Emporia State University. I am currently working on my Ed.S. (Education Specialist) degree at Fort Hays State. Next up - GULP - maybe Doctoral work at Liberty University starting in the year 2012 or later.
Workplace
After teaching at West Texas Middle School in Stinnett, Texas, from 1992 - 1994, I obtained a high school teaching position at Ulysses High School in Ulysses, Kansas, where I taught and coached (football, basketball, and softball) from 1994-2004.
My tenure there ended in 2004, however, as I took a job as the Assessment Coordinator in the Garden City school district in Garden City, Kansas, where I worked through 2007.
I started working in Valley Center in July 2007 as the Director of Learning Services. I also serve on various state committees and professional organization executive boards. I really enjoyed the opportunities and challenges.
In the summer of 2008 I accepted a position teaching middle school math in Parker, CO. It's been a good job for me thus far. I currently serve as the Colorado Math Standards Committee co-chair. It's been a rewarding experience.
