Mike's Story
2/.24/2015
I am updating the story below because it has changed dramatically.
After 7 1/2 years of marriage, my second marriage dissolved in April, 2013. Its dissolution hit me like a ton of bricks. I stayed in Pennsylvania for a year, trying to mend the marriage and sort things out. By April, 2014, it was clear there was no hope. I announced retirement plans for June, 2014. I moved to Madison, TN, in July to be near my son and his family in Gallatin, TN. It may have been one of the best moves of my life!
I bought a house on a small private lake with a deck looking over the lake. I am near my two grandsons, with whom I have had an absolute blast during the last 8 months. I have celebrated both of their birthdays, Christmas, Thanksgiving, sports (including ice hockey!), and various other good times. I absolutely love it!
My daughter got married in September and we celebrated in early November in Dallas. She lives there now working with the Dallas symphony. He works from home in the energy distribution business, doing things I really do not understand. Their combined new joy is a puppy.
I am doing consultation work with a retirement center about their pastoral care, work with the St. Thomas CPE center and their CPE students and with the United Methodist Church doing things with their chaplains. I also do occasional things like souvenir photography at Titans games and company parties and hosting convention people who want to see Nashville. It is a very good life, not at all boring, and still professionally fulfilling. I absolutely made the right decision to retire and return to Tennessee.
If you are coming to Nashville, let me know. There is a spare bed in the house and I can show you what a wonderful city this is.
My best to all of you,
Mike

I haven't quite gotten the hang of all of this internet stuff. My children tell me about Facebook and MySpace but it just goes over my head.
I live in Philadelphia where I work in a retirement center as the chaplain. ...Expand for more
I have pastored two churches in Arkansas, worked in Methodist Healthcare outside of Memphis as a hospital chaplain for 15 years and have now been in Philly for 9 years.
I sometimes miss Texas terribly. Lately I have been aware of how many of the C & W singers talk about "my home town" and old friends and events there. Then I really get nostalgic. I do think about what life was like then. I also wonder how you perceived me then and if your perceptions have changed over the years. I think there are lots of things I might like to know that I did not then.
My first marriage lasted 31 years, but ended when I came up here. We had two great children together and now share two marvelous grandchildren. Jamey, Hendrix, ('98), is in Nashville with his wife Jen and sons Mason, 5, and Miller, 3. He is working for a professional photographer doing major events in the Nashville area. Jen works for Heifer Project International. My daughter Rebecca (Sewanee '02) is in Dallas where she is a working as a development officer for the Dallas Museum of Art.. Both kids have seen more of the world than I ever thought about.
Philly is not Texas and not the South. But it has been good to me.
I remarried almost 6 1/2 years ago to a wonderful person with 3 children still at home. That has been an experience, going to BB games and talent shows all over again. But I am happy.
We went to Ft. Worth for our HS reunion in October, 2008. I cannot tell you DHS people how good it was to see you all again. I want to do that again, too.
I also took Donna to a Hendrix reunion before we got married, while Jamey still worked there. My college friends are the best! That also was a very good experience.
I can affirm now from this distance the importance of friends who have made my life what it is and I wonder how I have gotten so far away.
I look forward to hearing from any of you from time to time. Hopefully, we will see each other again soon. If you are coming to Philly, let me know.
Best to all,
Mike
