Michael's Story
I had so much fun growing up with the Class of 70 -- high school was a blast, and I look back on those days with fond memories. I moved to Northern Cal in September'70 to attend Stanford University in Palo Alto. After two years as an Architecture major, I still couldn't quite manage the "10-minute concept sketch" skill which is essential for practicing architects, and so I switched majors to Electrical Engineering. Ended up staying at Stanford for 8-1/2 years, receiving B.S, M.S, and Ph.D. degrees, all in Electrical Engineering. After graduation, I decided to become an entrepreneur, and started an electronics business based on an idea for a new data communications device.
I met Mary Etta Port by sheer, unplanned coincidence in the final days of 1976 and understood within a few weeks that she was very different -- we married in August 1977. kids' education as the eldest reached kindergarten. The San Francisco Peninsula has always been a bit cold for us, so we leave during winter each year for travel and warmth in the Caribbean and Los Cabos.
I'm currently working in a small group at Apple involved in future Sensing Technologies; the work is energizing and very interesting, and the Apple environment has a fast pace, which I prefer since it reminds me of the start-up days. My plan has been to continue working at Apple for as long as I am able -- I love working, I love learning and using my education, and I love making a contribution to the bigger effort.
I missed our 45th reunion due to business travel in China, but had so much fun and saw so many of the old friends at the 40th. Also just great to recognize many happy faces after that many years. In a crowded world with too many acting fake and uptight, it is always wonderful to come back to the MHS '70 reunions to see truly real people with whom I feel the special bond that growing up together brings. See you for our 50th! All the Best, Mike
