Rick's Story
"My Life and Hard Times" (w/apologies to J. Thurber)
Lived in TN and NM before moving to Castro Valley, CA, in 1959. After getting BA (University of The South), MA (Memphis State U) in English, thanks to the encouragement and inspiration of Frances Johnson, and married, I ended up teaching in private and public middle and high schools in Tennessee, '66-'67, '70-'76. Earned M.Div. and have served churches in TN (1979-1998) and LA (1998-2004) until retirement in March, 2004. Loved CA when I lived there--the perfect time, I think--, but don't think the gov't prints enough money to get me to move back, at least not to an urban area!
Married since '66; two daughters, one son. Daughters are RNs like Mom, son is in restaurant management in Natchitoches, LA. One grandson, one granddaughter.
Retirement is a mixed bag: I'm enjoying it, but as it was based on health, I didn't want to take it. Now that I have, I can't help wondering how many others have been in the same boat, realizing only after the fact that earlier would have been better!
"The Basics"
1st grade in Halls, TN; 2-9 in Albuquerque, NM; 10-12 at CVHS. The last three years were the best!
Seemed always to be something of a loner by choice; enjoyed academics VERY selectively. E.g., loved physics, liked biology & chemistry, was really good at none of them. Fooling with words--written & spoken--was always the most fun. Enjoyed Drama (Mr. Wendland, Miss Russell) and Humanities (Mr. Rose) Finally, Miss Johnson was without a doubt one of the very best teachers I ever had in seventeen years and three degrees. She was funny, inspiring, and ferociously intelligent.
Really enjoyed my time at CVHS. Wish I had kept in better touch with friends, but really lost touch completely...Expand for more
after the end of a relationship and the ensuing emotional meltdown in 12/63. Was found by one in the mid-90s, found another in 2004, yet another in 2008; would love to hear from more. And the happy part is that the "great meltdown" is completely in the past: The woman involved has even come to visit Jan and me, and we're all friends. So life is much better now!
"The Icing on The Cake"
Sewanee, a small and very academically oriented university in TN was my first stop. Damn near my last, too: I hadn't really worked in HS, and then was thrown in w/ a bunch of prep-school guys (no, no women, alas) who actually knew how to study! I survived, joined a fraternity, renewed my love affair with words, and had far too good a time. Discovered beer and had a few epic experiences, some of which I actually kind of remember. Married Jan in New Orleans 6 days after graduation.
"The Fun Part"
After working a year we decided that I really needed an M.A. to make any professional headway, so moved to Memphis, TN & went to Memphis State. There I learned that behind every successful grad student stands a wife who says, "I'm putting your sorry ass through school so like it or not you WILL study." I did and actually did pretty well, and went back to work. Got bitten by the religion and education bugs at the same time in a few years, so went off to Seabury-Western seminary for an MDiv; there Jan renewed my understanding of motivation. . . .
Workplace
Over the years: hospital janitor; restaurant cook & management; private and public school teaching (grades 8-12); parish priest; adjunct prof at Northwestern State in Natchitoches for a couple of years. Retired 2004 due to health: almost succeeded at "suicide by nicotine" and can no longer work.
