Mike's Story

Mike currently lives in Kapolei, He's married to Carol Porter Gabbard. They celebrated their golden 50th wedding anniversary on Dec. 27, 2018. They have 5 kids--3 boys and 2 girls and 8 grandkids. Mike's schools include Choctawhatchee High School. He later attended Pensacola Jr. College, Foothill College in CA, Sonoma State University, CA (BA in English), and Masters at Oregon State University.. He taught high school English in American Samoa, and also was a faculty member, guidance counselor, assistant-Dean of Instruction, and Dean of Adult and Community Education at American Samoa Community College. sort on O'ahu in 1977. He and Carol started and ran a small private K-12 school in Central O'ahu, and owned/operated The Natural Deli, a vegetarian restaurant in Honolulu. Mike served for 2 years on the Honolulu City Council from 2003-2005 and was elected to the State Senate in 2006, where he currently represents District 20 in West O'ahu. He is the chair of the Senate Agriculture and Environment Committee. Mike plays guitar, and is a songwriter, producing the CD "Stand As One...E Kupono me ke Aloha" in 2002. His daughter, Tulsi, is a congresswoman, representing Hawaii's 2nd Congressional District, and she's also a candidate for president of the U.S.
