Mike's Story

Life Still living in the Seattle area with my wife Tris (we met at FSU), and our son Jeffrey. Tris came out here to get her Ph.D. in Chemistry and I came along to see what the Northwest was really like. I wound up working at Microsoft and I'm still there and enjoying it. More frequent updates and photos are on facebook. I'm definitely the slacker in the family. Tris is now a practicing pharmacistand a City Council member in Bothell. Jeffrey is in second grade. Jeepers, some of ya'll have kids old enough to be Jeffrey's teacher! When schools out, we spend our free time in the mountains; hiking, biking and snowboarding. Jeffrey is now able to keep up on the blue runs. I always felt bad about leaving him so far behind - but hey, no friends on powder days If you haven't ever been out to Seattle and the Northwest, it's well worth the price of the ticket. Definitely come in the summer though! People seem to hibernate through the drizzly winter (unless they ski) and so when the summer kicks in it's like seeing the desert in bloom. festivals going on continuously. The Freemont Solstice parade and festival is by far the best one to get a feel for open attitudes of Seattle. If you have a bike and some body paint, you can join in! So if you like fine beer, fun times, awesome music and mountains, don't miss it. And, give us a call (we're in the phonebook) when you come out. We're always ready to take a break, sit and have a pint. Life in the northwest is great - I miss the beaches and the cool breeze off the water on a hot summer night, but love the mountains. High School Best part of high school was being on Yearbook. Being part of creating something was great. My favorite class was probably physics with Mr. Pullin. Since graduation, I still keep in touch with Norman Hullinger and Dean Birch, but that's about all. Favorite weekend activity was chilling at Sand Key with friends, frisbees and ... College Deviney - great, close to everything. Salley - sucked, almost ended my college experience. Four Seasons - stagger home from pour pauls in under 3 minutes. Park Point - excellent pre game. Tallahassee Village - cookouts with the neighbors. The Village - what a dive, but cheap. Pour Pauls - aaahhh the wheel and the darts the smell of cigarettes still makes me think of it. Freds - Jet fuel of course, that and the truck pulls in the parking lot. The Phyrst - bladder busts were the best. Bullwinkles - no cover and goo...Expand for more
d music made for some wonderful times. City of Fright- er night - great mix of both music and lifestyles. Workplace It's fun to look at the Social Security summary they've starting sending and seeing those first few years. Seems working for $1.50 an hour as a Bay Harbor Inn busboy didn't do too much for my retirement. And I'm glad I didn't leave FSU to turn that summer maintenance man job into a full time career - even though the condo manager promised me a raise to $4.00 if I would. Over the years I managed to have a fair number of summer and part time jobs. Probably because they all sucked, so I kept trying something different. There was some fun to them and I learned a few things too: washed dishes at Red Lobster (working Friday nights at a fish restaurant SUCKS!) bussed tables at Bay Harbor Inn (to all you waitresses out there - do NOT piss off your bus boys!) sold lumber at Pinellas Lindsey Lumber (you guys who sent your wives to buy concrete so you wouldn't have to load it - I curse you all!) sold hardware at Gold Triangle (a $1.00 commission for selling a ceiling fan isn't worth the paperwork hassle) dug ditches and unloaded trucks for Manpower (if they didn't call by 8:00 it was a beach day) flipped bugers at BK (don't be a butthead when you use the drive thru) guarded a rendering plant (why? I have no idea. If anyone wanted to break in to steal dead cow carcasses - I sure wasn't going to get in there way. It stunk so bad I stayed on the outside) delivered airline tickets for a travel company in Tallahassee (seems a lot of people don't travel with their spouses - but the they don't travel alone either.. nudge, nudge, wink, wink) operated the computers for IBM and First Florida Bank (I still don't know why we had to get all dressed up to work in secured area at night) Wrote COBOL for The Florida University System (The logic of: "if you don't give anyone a raise, the deadwood will leave" doesn't really work.) did what DBA's do at Safeco (crossed a lot of T's and dotted a lot of I's) I'm now working for Microsoft as a developer. My fancy schmantzy title is: lead Software Development Engineer. What that means is, I design database systems for the Autos group in MSN. It's a great job because I get to work with some really smart people from around the world, and use the latest software (did I just geek out?). Anyway, the next time your looking for a car, check out our site: autos.msn.com and let me know what you think.
