Mike's Story
School
My HS career was pretty lackluster but fun. Swiss Alp, Kovar Hall and Cistern dances were pretty much my favorite subjects. Along with a 1969 bright orange Roadrunner. Those trips on the band bus were also a lot of fun especially in the back on the return trip. Entirely too much beer and partying though. If I hadn't gone in the service when I did I would probably be a alcoholic slug.
Mrs. Ray and Mrs. Hanna were undoubtedly my most favorite teachers. They no doubt thought I was the worst student they could have been assigned. I'm sorry! I think if they knew how well I did in my college courses they would be surprised.
College
1974/1976 - Blinn Jr. College ( a real hotspot). Mrs. Hannah and Mrs. Ray would never believe I could get A's and B's in English or History.
1976/1978 - Southwest Texas State University (now that was more like it).
Workplace
1973 - Spend a year working construction after the Army and before going to school.
1974/1975 - Started my college career on the GI Bill.
1975/1979 - Worked at the Giddings State School with juvenile delinquents and yes, I could see myself.
1979/1985 - Correctional Officer at the Federal Prison in Bastrop.
1985/1989 - Chief Deputy Constable at Precinct 3 in Travis County.
1989/1993 - Patrol Deputy and Criminal Investi...Expand for more
gator for the Bastrop County Sheriff's Office.
1993/Present - State Trooper for the Texas Highway Patrol.
Military
June 1970 - With life spiraling somewhat our of control, I left SHS and enlisted in the US Army. Did basic training at FT. Lewis, Washington. Upon graduation from basic the Drill Sergeant said I had orders for O.C.S. I thought that meant Officer Candidate School, he told me it was "Over Cross the Street" for advanced infantry training.
April 1971 - Volunteered for duty in Vietnam.
October 1971 - Received my orders to go to Vietnam. Vietnam could be a really beautiful part of the world if governments had not been blowing it up and people weren't intent of killing you.
October 1972 - For my last 9 months in service to our Uncle Sam I requested duty FT. Sam Houston or FT. Hood. The Army in it's infinite wisdom sent me to FT. Huachuca, an old Cavalry post at the bottom of Arizona.
June 1973 - Finally my day had arrived and I was now a civilian again. I left the Army as a Sergeant E-5 with the following ribbons:
National Defense Service, Vietnam Campaign, Vietnam Service, Vietnamese Staff Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Vietnamese Air Medal and a Good Conduct Medal. No Audie Murphy but I sensed my life may have received the direction it had been lacking.
