Mike's Story
Workplace
I left Macy's in December 2004 to work for Johnson Controls as a Regional Operations Manager. I started on the JC Penny account, but have since moved over to the DHL account. I manage and coordinate the facility maintenance for all DHL sites in Northern California, Oregon, Washington, Alaska, Idaho, North and South Dakota, Arozonia, Utah, Nebraska, Wyoming and Montana, having to travel to each of the 205 sites to do surveys on the buildings and equipment. As of this update (Jan 22, 2009), I am now semi-retired from civilian life also at age 55!! Who would have thunk it??
Military
I retired in 1993 after 22 years, 6 months and 14 days (if I was counting) as a BTC (SW). My last duty station was Newport, RI. where I was the Boilers Chief to start with. I later relieved EMC Dave Dunn when he retired in 92 as the Transportation Officer. (Dave, where is Terry Smith??) Prior to that, I was in Desert Storm on the USS Sampson DDG-10. Right after Blandy Decom and before Sampson, I was on the USS America for 1 year, then 3 years shore ...Expand for more
duty in Washington, DC. After that, 3 years on the USS Vreeland FF-1068, then Sampson. When I retired, the wife and kids and I went to Oregon (where she is from) for 2 years, then I got a better job in California as a Power Plant Manager. I got tired of that after 5 years and looked for another job. Who would have thought that a knuckle dragging BT would become an Executive with Macy's. No, I don't sell anything. I get to spend their money to fix their old, run down buildings as the Sr. Project Manager. I attended college at night and received my BS degree in Business Management. I am also heavily involved in the Veterans of Foreign Wars. I get to travel around the state with the VFW in my free time. My wife Dana and I own a Travel Agency in Tracy. In that position, we do sometimes get really cheap travel all over the world. We now travel to a lot of the areas and places that I saw when I was in the Navy. Last year (2008) the only months we were not traveling was July ans September. Two of my 5 boys are married, and we have 5 grandkids.
