Mike's Story
Life
I quit high school 1 month before graduation and received my GED at PCC that same week. It was a protest kinda thing. I worked construction and took too many good drugs for several years. I joined the Navy as a Corpsman (respiratory technologist) in 1976. After RT school I trained at the Fleet Marine Service School for 6 months. Doing time with the Marines (jar heads) is rough, but your the Doc and highly respected/protected. After my 4 year stint in the service I went to several different schools. I received an associates degree in CAD/CAM drafting in Ventura CA.; I got my Radiological Technologist (X-Ray) license in the same town, I loved southern California. Then we moved back to Portland and I worked as an LVN, RT, RTT, EMT and as a U.S. Postal Employee (I didn't fit the mold, thank god). I had met my first wife while in the Navy during my first enlistment. She re-enlisted and after another 4 years in California we received orders to the Philippines. I got a job at the station gym, passing out towels for $4.35/hour. (1988) and now I'm still working for the Navy (as a civilian) but, I am the Athletic Director (boss) and I make a hell of a lot more than $4.35/hour. My wife left the Philippines in 1990 and I stayed on as an ex-pat until 1991 when Mt. Pinatubo blew up. I have witnessed 2 pyroclastic explosions from 30 miles away in an 11 year time span, big deal. I was evacuated on the USS Abraham Lincoln, as we were cruising through the Visayan Sea we pulled along side the USS Midway to receive some dog food and diapers flown over by helo for all the militarty families and pets being evacuated during Operation Firey Vigil. Well, I witnessed the oldest and newest aircraft carriers in the fleet pass each other. That was a first that will never ever happen again, the USS Midway was decommissioned that year. I landed in Corpus Christi, TX via: Cebu, Guam, Siapan, Hawaii, Seattle and Houston. I still live and work in Corpus Christi, TX running several gyms, pools, courts, fields and I direct a large sports program. Keeps the troups physically fit and ready to kill. My present wife (2nd) and I have been together for 15 years, I met her in the Philippines. We celebrated our 10th wedding anniversary in Las Vegas last year at the Luxor. I have 2 daughters from my first marriage and 3 grand boys: Eric, Tyler and Dillon. My oldest daughter lives here in TX and my youngest lives near her mother in Salem, OR. We plan on retiring in 10 years and moving back to Oregon. We usually visit OR every other year, I miss home and my family. Betty loves Oregon, she digs the trees and mountains. We kayak, swim, plant too many gardens, read, travel and try to enjoy our lives togrther. If I had not met Betty, I would most likley be picking up hot pennies on Burnside Ave., waiting for the fruit picker's truck to pick me up.
See you all in heaven or the funny papers, which ever comes first. Peace and free love.
Mike, Miguel, Wiley Coyote, Spike or just hey you.
