Mike's Story
Life
After graduating high school, I went to college in Prescott and then returned to the Verde Valley for work. I stayed around there until the mid 80's when I left for the Phx area and stayed there until 1991 when I left for South East Texas. I have been in SE Tx since. "I survived Hurricane Rita". lol
School
Looking back, school was actually a pretty good time. Miss a lot of old friends, but then who doesn't.
College
AAS in Fire Science at Yavapai College in Prescott. It was a fantastic 2 years filled with hard studies and sometimes even harder partying. (or was it vice versa, kind of a fog. lol)
Workplace
Well there were the burgers I flipped at A&W. The dishes I washed at Page Springs Restaurant. Volunteer & paid fire department time. Fire & Air Rescue at McDonnell Douglas FD. Oh yeah, how could I forget, vampire at SMH in Scottsdale. And finally, 1991, I was trained in Remote Environment Paramedicine to work as a paramedic in the offshore oil industry when I moved to Tx. I have been with the same company since and I have spent most of that time in the Gulf of Mexico, but have also been to Russia and Trinidad. All while working combinations of 14/14, 21/21, 28/28, day schedules. Early 2007 I was transferred to a land rig in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, wow what a difference. The area is at a higher elevation than where I grew up in Az, but very similar in appearance. ...Expand for more
It really reminds me of the Verde Valley. I spent 5-1/2 years working in Colorado, 14-14. So, I got to go up there and cool off in the summer and then thaw out when I was home in the winters. After that assignment ended mid 2012, I worked three 28-day hitches in Pennsylvania with a seismic crew. As of Oct '12 I am back in the Gulf of Mexico on a productions platform, Bullwinkle. Stayed there 2 years, then transferred to a spar floating production facility in 4,500 feet of water in Mid 2014. I stayed there 7 years. Even survived the COVID, the quarantines and serial testing that involved, while working there. In Oct 2021 I decided that I was done working offshore. 28 years of the past 30 had been on extended hitch work. So, I decided it was time to resign and move on to a new chapter. Haha or so I thought. The company didn’t want me to go, so they offered me a job working out of a local occupational medicine clinic supporting the local petrochemical plants. I decided to give it a try and since then I’ve been working a basic 40-hour week, going home every night, for the most part. I have been with the same original medic group that I joined in 1991 through buy out and acquisitions, and have a credited seniority of 28 years with the current company. Have to wait and see what happens next. And it’s been 40+ years since I became an EMT-basic, and 30+ years since I became a Paramedic.
