Mike's Story

Life I was born in St. Pete, FL. 12/15/1966 and we relocated to Largo when I was five. I have an older brother, Mark. Our family was not attending any church when the neighbors behind us, the Trotters invited us to Indian Rocks Baptist. That was a big influence in my life. I went to Kindergarten at Oakhurst Elementary, 1st grade at Bauder Elementary, Second through 5fth at Ridgecrest Elementary. I got into scouts around that time, ending up with troop 468. When I was nine, I made a personal decision to trust in Jesus Christ by faith for forgiveness of my sin problem (we all got it) and for eternal life. Sixth through Eighth I was at Seminole Middle. I built some friendships with some Seminole people but I was bummed that most of them were going to Seminole High, not Largo High where I went. Wow was I an under-achiever at Largo High, taking weightlifting and Jewelry multiple times. I worked my senior year at the Paw Paw Tree. I had a 72 Chevelle that was ugly green and had a small motor, but with some help from the Ketchums a big block chevy engine gave it some power. And then a black lacquer paint job helped too. I used to love to cruise Clearwater Beach on weekend nights. In High School I reconnected with Mickey Milleman who I remain friends with. And I remain friends with Roger Carter who used to live behind us. My family moved to northeast St. Pete in 1984 and we began attending Fifth Avenue Baptist. I worked the next four years at JByrons Department Store. At SPJC, I got into computers. When I transferred over to USF, mostly taking courses at the St. Pete Bayboro campus, I was all about my MIS major, computers. I also began volunteering in the church youth ministry. That was a great experience. I had a great job opportunity with IBM in Tampa as an End User Support Representative but they were in a hiring freeze when I graduated, so I spent the next six years with a great information system company, EDS. I lived in Tallahassee, Kentucky, Dallas, then Richmond, VA for 4 years. I experienced a lot of changes in those years. I was into computers, weightlif...Expand for more
ting, softball, and youth ministry. In Richmond, I had a great experience working with youth at Grove Avenue Baptist. I was engaged for awhile but when she broke it off, I turned to God like never before and within two weeks, I believed and still do that God called me to be a pastor of the gospel ministry of Jesus Christ. That year, I prayed about this, saved some money, and served faithfully at church as a volunteer. In 1997 I left EDS and relocated to Lynchburg, VA to attend seminary at Liberty University and serve in the youth ministry at Thomas Road Baptist Church where Jerry Falwell pastored. Those were some great years. In the fall of 1998 I met Kym Johnson at a job off campus. Within a couple of months, we were in love and married in July of 1999. Kym is godly, beautiful, and very intelligent. She is truly my best friend and a great gift from God. I began working fulltime on staff at LU before I graduated. After I graduated, God sent me to a Baptist church in southern GA to work with teenagers and the educational ministries. We had our first child, Luke. Surprise, he has red hair. He is a thinker. Two years later, we relocated to a smallish town in central PA where I served as an Educational Minister at a Bible Church. We had two more boys, Josh and Zach. Josh has some red in his hair and is an energetic people-person who very bold and tough. Zach has sandy brown hair and blue eyes and is very friendly. They are all wonderful, brilliant, and great looking. In 2006, God called me to pastor a small church in a small town in northwestern PA. God is very good to our family. We are enjoying life, learning, and making a difference in people's lives. In 2012, I was blessed to return to Liberty University, this time to be one of the Campus Pastors. In early 2013, our daughter Elle was born. What a huge blessing! She has some blonde hair and green eyes. In 2019, I transitioned to chaplaincy work and then in 2022, I returned to Liberty University where I support the Doctor of Clinical Psychology program.
