Mike's Story

I assume those of you who are reading this are my former classmates. Those of you from Canyon knew me as a very wild child probably destined for trouble. Those of you from Newbury Park knew me as “Tex”, a little bit of a wild child, though not quite as bad. Hardly anyone knew me from Amarillo High because I only went a half day and worked the other half. By my senior I was a pretty devout Evangelical Christian and by the time I graduated I had joined the Army. This is the abbreviated rest of the story. The Army did not work out for me. The job I selected required a pretty high-level security clearance because it involved launching nuclear missiles at the Russians from Germany. I wasn’t aware of this at the time, but there was an incident in late 1983 in which the Russians thought that we had launched these missiles at them during one of our drills, their global missile commander was order to immediately retaliate, i.e. end the of the world as we knew it, but the general refused to believe it. As we all now know, the US did not launch any missiles and so their general was correct not to retaliate. However, given the close call and the close proximity of these missiles causing the Russian to be on a hair-trigger, President Reagan ordered the Army to remove those missiles from West Germany and there goes my job. The Army just told to me that they canceled my security clearance because of my juvenile record and wanted me to take a job I did not want. So I chose a Trainee Discharge instead, which basically means I was never there – no military record, but I did feel extremely guilty for leaving my fellow troops. Afterwards I had some basic go-nowhere type jobs. For a semester in 1984 I attended Amarillo College (in Electronics), joined Sigma Alpha Delta and joined the Student Government Council, which was too much to handle on top of having a job. In late 1985 I was given the opportunity to buy a company called Golden Eagle Gourmet Foods. From a customer’s perspective this was a very real business but legally speaking it wasn’t at all. It had 2 trucks/territories spanning the entire Texas panhandle down to Abilene, so I had to salespeople, a secretary and myself. I went back to Amarillo College to learn Business and Accounting, and did my own bookkeeping and purchasing. The gourmet food market ended up taking a nosedive during the 1986 oil and S&L crisis which devastated Texas. Shortly after that failure I met Kim Noyse (CHS class of 1985), got married and we moved to Los Angeles where my career as a Cost Accountant in Manufacturing got started. It continued in that path until 2012. Along the way I picked up various IT skills and for many years I wore two hats, one in Finance and one in IT. Relationship wise, Kim and I lasted about 11 years with no kids. We were still having too much fun with life a...Expand for more
s for us to make a family, and it was that fun that eventually ended the relationship. We lived in LA for bout 4 years then moved to the Garland (near Dallas). While in LA I got more involved in politics and ended up getting elected to the Ventura County Republican Central Committee. In 1988 I went to the California State Convention and lead the way in preventing the Republican Party from adopting a plank calling for the death penalty for anyone convicted of Drug Trafficking. When we moved back to Texas in 1990 my political career diminished into nothing and over the following years I moved in a progressive direction while the party moved further and further to the right; end of that. In the 90’s my career peaked out as a Finance and IT Manager for Tyson Foods, but then I tried a new direction for a couple of years until our marriage ended in 97. Over the course of those 11 years with Kim my religion transformed from Evangelical Christian into Shamanic Spiritualism. Towards the end of my marriage, I had premonitions of a journey through a deep valley in which my understanding of life would be seriously challenged, but it was a journey I could only take alone. It started with me moving back to LA on my own and took a little over two years to truly manifest, or shall I say “hit rock bottom”. What happened in LA might one day be the subject of a book and I will not get into the details here. While out there I worked for various companies doing various things, but the highlights are working Warner Brother Studios as well as doing an internship with Levine Communication Office, a major PR firm within the entertainment industry. At the end of 1999 I moved back to Texas; stopping over in Amarillo for a couple of moths and then on to Austin where I got back into my long term career path – Cost Accounting within Manufacturing supported by my IT skillset. My career really took off in terms of earnings because of the combined skillset. In 2008 I got remarried to a sweet Indonesian girl who had been here in the US for about 12 years who was also divorced and had no kids. In 2012 I crossed full time to the IT side of the fence as a Project Manager and we moved to Houston for that job. Two years after that I went to work for the company I now work for, CDI Energy Products (a Division of Michelin) and I have continued to prosper. In 2020 I joined Texas Search and Rescue as a volunteer first responder. I also do some volunteer work for Refugee Services of Texas. In addition to my work I enjoy Scuba Diving, Travel, Sky Diving on occasion, Hiking/Camping, Fishing, Gardening, helping refugees resettle in the US and of course all manner of Search and Rescue. It has been an interesting and fulfilling journey so far. With some trepidation, due to the uncertainty we all now live in, I look forward to the future.
