Mike's Story

Life In 2006 I retired from BellSouth and began to devote most of my time to the things I want to do when I want to do them. I still do a little flight instruction, occasionally do some security consulting, and sell some boats for a friend. I still live in Hoover, Alabama just south of Birmingham. In May 2007 I started building my own vacation home in a beautiful valley in Greene county Tennessee. It's been a lot of physical work. Unfortunately I had to have back surgery in June of 2008 and have had scale back work on the vacation house. As of August 2009 I've moved in and spend about every third week there. I bought a new motorcycle for home in Alabama and took the old one to Tennessee so I can ride in the mountains. I am married to Ellen (Kelly), my wonderful love from 1967. Ellen is a 1967 Donelson grad. We dated for two years back then and broke up while I was overseas with the Marines. We got back together and married in 1992. Between us we have four children and one grandchild. After graduation from Two Rivers in 1966, I attended college for a couple of years, spent four years in the Marines, went back to college again, and then went to work for BellSouth. While with BellSouth I finished my Commercial Pilot's license and got my Flight Instruct...Expand for more
or's Certificate, spent several years with the Tennessee National Guard's 450th Aviation Assault Helicopter Company, earned the two highest security certifications in the world, Certified Protection Professional (CPP) and Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP), obtained a Masters in Project Management from George Washington University, and taught flying for several thousand hours in my "spare" time. Retired life is better than I could have ever imagined. If you have ever heard a man say after he has retired that he doesn't know how he ever had time for work, that's me. I am never bored. I have trouble finding time to do ALL the the things that I want to do. I loved spending the few days we all had together at the 1966 Two Rivers grad reunion in 2006. I am just sorry that more of "us" didn't attend. The Saturday night of the actual reunion is just too short. Spending time Friday at the late lunch, then the bar for happy hour with a few friends, then Friday night at the social, then Saturday at the school tour, then lunch Saturday afternoon, and finally the reunion itself Saturday night was still too short. Those of you who just came to the reunion Saturday night need to try to spend more time with all of us in 2011, if not sooner.
