Mike's Story
Life
Now living in the sunny Okanagan in BC. Moved here from Ottawa after 27 years in the Air Force and 3 as a consultant. Two tours in Germany while in the Air Force; Baden-Soellingen from '79 to '83 and Lahr from '87 to '91.
Married a German girl in Baden '83, posted to Edmonton from '83 to '87 and divorced during second tour in Germany. Two kids, a son living in Germany & a daughter here in Canada.
Looking forward to being a ski bum in the winter & riding my motorcycle(s) in the summer.
Military
Joined Canadian Armed Forces (Air Force, Instrument Electrical Technician, 551) in '74. Posted to Cold Lake after boot camp, electrical theory & technical training in Cornwallis, Kingston & CFB Borden respectively.
Cold Lake '74 to '79: CF-5 Freedom Fighter in ARO and 419 Sqn; CF-104 Starfighter (IE Tech course only, at 10 FTTU, didn't work on the "pigs" in Cold Lake); CT-133 T-Bird, CH-135 Twin Huey & the Dak (Pinocchio) at Base Flight.
Baden-Soellingen '79 to '83: CF-104 Starfighter (Servicing, pump gas, wipe the windshield, launch & recovery) 439 Sqn; CT-133 T-bird servicing, snags & maintenance, also serviced all visiting NATO aircraft, y...Expand for more
ou name it I kicked the tires & fueled it up, GTTF (Group Transient & Training Flight).
Edmonton '83 to '87: My introduction to "Army Training Sir!" CH-135 Twin Huey and CH-136 Kiowa in support of the Brigade in Southern Alberta and anything else the Air Force could dream up, 408 "Goose" Sqn.
Lahr '87 to '91: More Army stuff, CH-136 Kiowa in support of 4 CMBG (4 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group), 444 "Cobra" Sqn.
Ottawa '91 to '01: Ah yes, the nation's capital as a headquarters weenie, CH-113 Labrador Search & Rescue helicopters as technical specialist for Instrument Electrical and Integral Systems. At last something real useful supporting an aircraft whose role is to save people rather than hunt them down.
Ottawa '01 to '04: Finally had enough of the uniform and quit to be hired on as a contractor for a consulting firm providing technical & engineering support to DND. Technical Publications manager for the CF-18 Hornet, managing electronic as well as paper technical manuals for the fleet. You would not believe the budget required to distribute & keep current all the manuals for an aircraft weapons system. Your (and my) tax dollars at work!
